During the o<\/em>ngoing "two sessions", Chinese director Feng Xiaogang suggested schools should teach traditio<\/em>nal Chinese characters that co<\/em>ntain cultural connotations.
\u4eca\u5e74“\u4e24\u4f1a”\u7684\u5206\u7ec4\u8ba8\u8bba\u4e2d,\u51af\u5c0f\u521a\u547c\u5401\u5728\u4e2d\u5c0f\u5b66\u7684\u8bfe\u672c\u91cc\u6062\u590d\u90e8\u5206\u6709\u6587\u5316\u542b\u4e49\u7684\u7e41\u4f53\u5b57\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"TraditionalAs <\/span>a member of the Chinese People’s Political Co<\/em>nsultative Co<\/em>nference (CPPCC)(\u653f\u534f\u59d4\u5458<\/strong>), Feng <\/span>proposed(\u63d0\u8bae)<\/strong> <\/span>reviving 50 to 200 most meaningful <\/span>traditio<\/em>nal characters(\u7e41\u4f53\u5b57)<\/strong> <\/span>in the textbooks. He said this would not give the children too much pressure, and at the same time would allow them to capture the <\/span>essence(\u7cbe\u534e)<\/strong> <\/span>of Chinese culture.<\/p>\n

He also <\/span>cited<\/strong> <\/span>two <\/span>examples(\u4e3e\u4f8b).<\/strong> <\/span>The traditio<\/em>nal character for <\/span>\u4eb2<\/strong>(qin; meaning "to be close to someone") is <\/span>\u89aa<\/strong>, whose right part is <\/span>\u898b<\/strong> <\/span>(jian, the traditio<\/em>nal character for \u89c1, meaning "to see"). The traditio<\/em>nal character for <\/span>\u7231<\/strong>(ai, meaning love) is \u611b; and there is a <\/span>\u5fc3<\/strong> <\/span>(xin, heart) in it.<\/p>\n

Feng said the traditio<\/em>nal Chinese characters are telling us that to be close to someone, you have to meet them, and to love someone, you should have a heart, but the <\/span>simplified Chinese characters(\u7b80\u4f53\u5b57)<\/strong> <\/span>miss the meanings.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>proposal(\u63d0\u6848)<\/strong> <\/span>stirred a heated discussion in the group meeting, as well as on Chinese social media. A sample of comments on Weibo:<\/p>\n

@Flower-rainbow: The <\/span>structures(\u7ed3\u6784)<\/strong> <\/span>of many traditio<\/em>nal characters clearly imply their meanings and Chinese culture. I absolutely agree with Feng.<\/p>\n

@Jianghuke: Traditio<\/em>nal Chinese is the <\/span>soul(\u7075\u9b42)<\/strong> <\/span>of Chinese characters, especially for <\/span>Chinese calligraphy(\u4e66\u6cd5).<\/strong><\/p>\n

@Flying-duck: Culture should keep up with the times, and times are changing! We should <\/span>simplify(\u7b80\u5316)<\/strong> <\/span>our lives. We have <\/span>adjusted to(\u9002\u5e94)<\/strong> <\/span>the simplified characters already, why bother with the traditio<\/em>nal ones?<\/p>\n
