Chinese students often have mandatory military training in late summer or early autumn. With a new semester approaching, the military training season has begun. Some think the experience is fun, while others really dread its harsh nature.

An unnamed freshman(\u65b0\u751f) in a high school(\u9ad8\u4e2d) in Nanjing, east China’s Jiangsu province, felt so tired after a training session that he called the police(\u62a5\u8b66), saying "I am exhausted, but the instructor still asks me to go on".<\/p>\n

When parents of the students in the said high school were asked a<\/em>bout their views on military training(\u519b\u8bad), most of them said they supported(\u652f\u6301) it, but some also showed co<\/em>ncern for their children, questio<\/em>ning(\u8d28\u7591) if it was necessary to take the training to such an extreme(\u6781\u7aef).<\/p>\n

According to education authorities, the purpose of military training is to strengthen students’ physical quality(\u589e\u5f3a\u4f53\u8d28), promote the spirit of patriotism(\u53d1\u626c\u7231\u56fd\u4e3b\u4e49\u7cbe\u795e) and develop students’ good will and character(\u78e8\u7ec3\u610f\u5fd7\u548c\u54c1\u683c).<\/p>\n

Education in China is a state-run system of public education run by the Ministry of Education(\u6559\u80b2\u90e8). All citizens must attend school for at least nine years, known as the nine-year compulsory education(\u4e5d\u5e74\u4e49\u52a1\u6559\u80b2), which the government funds. It includes six years of primary education, starting at age six or seven, and three years of junior seco<\/em>ndary education (middle school) for ages 12 to 15.
