Yajie: Well, we’ve been learning how to talk a<\/em>bout jobs. \u4f60\u5728\u54ea\u5de5\u4f5c\uff1fLiterally, wher do you work? But when you meet a student without a job, what would you say to start the conversation?

Cam: Hey Yajie, today’s topic is really timely. I am actually meeting with some university students next week to help them learn English.  Now I can practice my Chinese, too!  
Yajie: Good times. In Chinese, student is \u5b66\u751f.
Cam: \u5b66\u751f(xue2 sheng1), student. How a<\/em>bout university student?
Yajie: \u5927\u5b66\u5b66\u751f University student\u3002University, \u5927\u5b66. \u5927, d-a, fourth falling tone. Basically it means ‘big’. And \u5927\u5b66\u5b66\u751f can also be shortened to just\u5927\u5b66\u751f
Cam: I see. \u5927\u5b66\u5b66\u751f (da xue xue sheng) and \u5927\u5b66\u751f(da xue sheng) are the same. Both mean university student. <\/p>\n

Conversation1:<\/p>\n

Yajie: \u4e0a\u5b66\uff0c go to school or study. \u4e0a, sh-ang, fourth tone. \u4e0a means to go. And \u5b66, as we mentio<\/em>ned just now, x-ue, second tone, which means school. 
Cam: \u4e0a\u5b66, go to school. \u4f60\u5728\u54ea\u513f\u4e0a\u5b66 (ni3 zai4 nar3 shang4 xue2)\uff1f wher do you study? Ni3 means you, zai nar is at wher, and shang xue is study.  wher do you study?
Yajie: \u6211\u5728\u5317\u4eac\u5927\u5b66\u4e0a\u5b66\u3002I study at Peking University. Cam, you know, Peking University, \u5317\u4eac\u5927\u5b66, is one of the most prestigious universities in China.
Cam: Yes, I’ve heard of it. (wo zai Beijing da xue shang xue). <\/p>\n

Cam: Yajie, how do you say middle school and primary school in Chinese?
Yajie: Middle school. \u4e2d\u5b66.\u4e2d, zh-ong, first tone, means ‘middle’. And primary school is \u5c0f\u5b66 (xiao).
Cam: I know \u5c0f means ‘little or small’.
Yajie: Right. \u5c0f\u5b66, primary school.
Cam: It’s funny. \u5c0f\u5b66, primary school, literally means ‘small school’. \u4e2d\u5b66\uff0cmiddle school. And \u5927\u5b66, university, ‘big school’\u3002Easy to remember.<\/p>\n

Cam:\u5c0f\u5f20\u5728\u54ea\u513f\u4e0a\u5b66(xiao3 zhang1 zai4 nar3 shang4 xue2)\uff1f wher does Xiao Zhang study?
Yajie: \u5979\u5728\u4e2d\u5b66\u4e0a\u5b66 (ta1 zai4 zhong1 xue2 shang4 xue2)\u3002She is studying at the middle school. So she is a middle school student. \u4e2d\u5b66\u751f.
Cam: \u4e2d\u5b66\u751f(zhong1 xue2 sheng1), a middle school student\u3002So \u5c0f\u5b66\u751f(xiao3 xue2 sheng1) must be a primary school student\u3002
Yajie: Right. For example, He is a primary school student. \u4ed6\u662f\u5c0f\u5b66\u751f\u3002\u4ed6\u5728\u5c0f\u5b66\u4e0a\u5b66 (ta1 zai4 xiao3 xue2 shang4 xue2)\u3002He’s studying at the primary school. <\/p>\n
