Nanyue Temple, also known as the "Little Palace Museum of South China" and the "Palace Museum of the South", is the largest ancient architectural complex in South China. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty and went through six fires and sixteen renovations and expansions in the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the 8th year of Guangxu's Reign (1882) the area it covered reached its present 98,500 square meters. The temple has nine rows and four courtyards fenced with red-brick walls, soaring turrets, and the waters of Shoujian Spring flowing around the walls. It looks much like the Palace Museum in Beijing. Buddhism and Taoism coexist in Nanyue Temple. Eight Taoist temples and 8 Buddhist temples lie on the east and west side of Nanyue Temple respectively, this layout is unique to this temple. On August 15th, according to the Chinese lunar calendar, a grand temple fair will be staged there; it will attract many overseas Chinese people from Southeast Asian Buddhist countries, Buddhists from Japan as well as devout men and women returning home. They make a long journey here to worship, so that joss sticks and candles may stay alight at the temple throughout the year.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

The outstanding wood carvings, stone carvings and clay sculptures of the temple are known as the "3 Wonders of Southern China". Additionally, the temple features the most fabulous "800 dragons"; they can be seen everywhere, whether on the girders, pillars and eaves of the temple hall, or on the plinth, god's seat, or even the doorway and the bucket arch. Furthermore, they have different looks and expressions. An old story has it that the 800 dragons are protecting Nanyue. This stone arch bridge on which we stand is named "Shoujian Bridge", below it is the Shoujian River. It is said that Mount Heng is the source of the water in Nanyue Temple. The water is, also called Nanyue; it is believed to help prolong one's life as Nanyue is the mountain of longevity. The bridge is therefore named after the river. According to legend, anyone that can stride across the bridge will live to a ripe old age. The temple is located in the north of Nanyue Township. Of all the temples in the Five Famous Mountains of China, it is the best-preserved ancient architectural complex and is on the largest scale.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n
