The verb \u4f1a (huì) can be used to express ability that has been learned, i.e. a skill. In this case \u4f1a is an auxiliary verb. This structure is the easiest way to express all kinds of skills, from languages, to sports to skills in daily life such as cooking and driving.<\/p>\n

Structure<\/strong><\/p>\n

The basic structure for \u4f1a is:<\/p>\n

T\u0101 huì shu\u014d zh\u014dn\u0261wén.
\u4ed6 \u4f1a \u8bf4 \u4e2d\u6587\u3002<\/div>\n

Negating \u4f1a sentences<\/p>\n

\u4f1a sentences are negated with \u4e0d, which is inserted in front of \u4f1a:

Again, this is the simplest way to express the lack of a learned ability. Examples:<\/p>\n

W\u01d2men bú huì shu\u014d déy\u01d4.
\u6211\u4eec \u4e0d \u4f1a \u8bf4 \u5fb7\u8bed\u3002<\/div>\n
We can’t speak German.<\/div>\n

Note that if we say \u6211\u4e0d\u80fd\u8bf4\u5fb7\u8bed the speaker is saying that he can’t speak German for some reason other than his own ability, perhaps because speaking German in Chinese class is forbidden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
