M: Hey, Stuart, you’d never guess – my parents gave me a computer as birthday present! W\u01d2de fùm\u01d4 sòngg\u011biw\u01d2 yìtái diànn\u01ceo zuòwéi sh\u0113ngrì l\u01d0wù.<\/p>\n

S: That’s great!<\/p>\n

M: Yeah! And these days, I am really into surfing the web. Zhèj\u01d0ti\u0101n, w\u01d2 míshàngle shàngw\u01ceng. \u8fd9\u51e0\u5929\uff0c\u6211\u8ff7\u4e0a\u4e86\u4e0a\u7f51\u3002<\/p>\n

S: So what do you do?<\/p>\n

M: I send emails, visit different websites, and chat quite often. W\u01d2 f\u0101 diànz\u01d0 yóujiàn, f\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn, hái j\u012bngcháng liáoti\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: Ok, now let’s look at the new stuff.<\/p>\n

M: I said, \u6211\u7684\u7236\u6bcd\u9001\u7ed9\u6211\u4e00\u53f0\u7535\u8111\u4f5c\u4e3a\u751f\u65e5\u793c\u7269\u3002\u7236\u6bcd\uff0cFU MU, fùm\u01d4, fourth tone third tone, parents. Here fù means father, and m\u01d4 is mother. Put them together, and you get ‘parents’.<\/p>\n

S: Yìtái diànn\u01ceo. Diànn\u01ceo, DIAN NAO, fourth tone third tone, means computer. We’ve already learnt that ‘diàn’ means electric, electricity. And out of interest, the ‘n\u01ceo’ means brain. So ‘electric brain’ computer, diànn\u01ceo.<\/p>\n

M: And did you notice the measure word for computer? Duìle, it’s ‘tái’, TAI, tái, second tone, which is the most commo<\/em>nly used measure word for electric home appliances and machines.<\/p>\n

S: So if TV is diànshìj\u012b, ‘electric visual machine’, \u7535\u89c6\u673a\uff0chow do we say ‘I have a TV set’ in Chinese?<\/p>\n

M: Wánquán zhèngquè. W\u01d2y\u01d2u yìtái diànshìj\u012b. Say it with me. \u6211\u6709\u4e00\u53f0\u7535\u89c6\u673a\u3002<\/p>\n

S: Now one more. If ‘washing machine’ is x\u01d0y\u012bj\u012b, a ‘wash-clothes machine’, how to say ‘I want to buy a washing machine’?<\/p>\n

M: Did you say ‘w\u01d2xi\u01ceng m\u01cei yìtái x\u01d0y\u012bj\u012b’? \u6211\u60f3\u4e70\u4e00\u53f0\u6d17\u8863\u673a\u3002You did? G\u014dngx\u01d0g\u014dngx\u01d0, your Chinese is wonderful!<\/p>\n

S: Now the last new word in this sentence – zuòwéi, ZUO WEI, \u4f5c\u4e3a, fourth tone second tone, means ‘as’, or ‘to serve as’.<\/p>\n

M: So the whole sentence, \u6211\u7684\u7236\u6bcd\u9001\u7ed9\u6211\u4e00\u53f0\u7535\u8111\u4f5c\u4e3a\u751f\u65e5\u793c\u7269\u3002My parents gave me a computer as a birthday present. As a birthday present, zuòwéi sh\u0113ngrì l\u01d0wù.<\/p>\n

S: So, guess we need a break!<\/p>\n

S: Good! Now let’s co<\/em>ntinue explaining the new stuff.<\/p>\n

M: I told Stuart, zhèj\u01d0ti\u0101n, w\u01d2 míshàngle shàngw\u01ceng.<\/p>\n

S: Zhèj\u01d0ti\u0101n, literally, ‘these several days’. And of course it means ‘these days’.<\/p>\n

M: Míshang, MI SHANG, \u8ff7\u4e0a\uff0ccan mean fascinated by, engrossed in, crazy a<\/em>bout, or infatuated with.<\/p>\n

S: And shàngw\u01ceng, SHANG WANG, fourth tone third tone, \u4e0a\u7f51\uff0cmeans to go on, or surf, the web. W\u01ceng is web or net.<\/p>\n

M: So ‘\u6211\u8ff7\u4e0a\u4e86\u4e0a\u7f51’ is ‘I’m crazy a<\/em>bout surfing the web’. W\u01d2 míshàngle shàngw\u01ceng.<\/p>\n

S: What do you do then?<\/p>\n

M: I send emails, visit different websites, and chat quite often. \u6211\u53d1\u7535\u5b50\u90ae\u4ef6\uff0c\u8bbf\u95ee\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u7f51\u7ad9\uff0c\u8fd8\u7ecf\u5e38\u804a\u5929 W\u01d2 f\u0101 diànz\u01d0 yóujiàn, f\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn, hái j\u012bngcháng liáoti\u0101n.<\/p>\n
