M: Last lesson we were excited a<\/em>bout going traveling. So, Stuart, wher do you want to go? \u4f60\u60f3\u53bb\u54ea\u513f\uff1fn\u01d0 xi\u01ceng qù n\u01cer?<\/p>\n

S: Let me have a look at the guide book. \u8ba9\u6211\u770b\u770b\u65c5\u6e38\u6307\u5357\u3002Ràng w\u01d2 kànkan l\u01dayóu zh\u01d0nán.<\/p>\n

M: Ok.<\/p>\n

S: Uh, wher shall I go first?<\/p>\n

M: How a<\/em>bout the Tàihú Lake\uff1fTàihú z\u011bnmeyàng? It’s a very famous scenic spot in China. Or, \u6216\u8005\uff0cperhaps the West Lake, \u897f\u6e56\uff0cx\u012bhú in Hangzhou City?<\/p>\n

S: Aha! Here’s the place I’d like to visit first – \u897f\u85cf\uff0cTibet! W\u01d2 yào xi\u0101n qù x\u012bzàng. Maybe I’ll climb Mount Everest! \u6211\u8fd8\u8981\u767b\u4e0a\u73e0\u7a46\u6717\u739b\u5cf0\u9876\uff01W\u01d2 hái yào d\u0113ngshang Zh\u016bmùl\u01cengm\u01cef\u0113ng d\u01d0ng.<\/p>\n

M: That’s ambitious!<\/p>\n

S: You bet!<\/p>\n

M: OK, now the new stuff. At first Stuart had no idea a<\/em>bout wher to go, so he said –<\/p>\n

S: Ràng w\u01d2 kànkan l\u01dayóu zh\u01d0nán. Ràng w\u01d2 kànkan l\u01dayóu zh\u01d0nán.<\/p>\n

M: l\u01dayóu, we’ve learnt, means to travel. And zh\u01d0nán, ZHI NAN, third tone second tone, zh\u01d0nán, literally means ‘point south’. But now it usually means ‘guidance’ or ‘instruction’.<\/p>\n

S: So, ‘l\u01dayóu zh\u01d0nán’ means ‘Tour Guide’, or ‘guide book’, very useful.<\/p>\n

M: Tàihú Lake, tàihú, is one of China’s well-known scenic spots.<\/p>\n

M: I also recommended the West Lake, \u897f\u6e56\uff0cXI HU, x\u012bhú. We’ve learnt that x\u012b means ‘west’. So I’m sure you can easily guess what ‘hú’ means. Duì le, hú, lake, \u6e56\u3002And x\u012bhú is a very famous scenic spot in east China’s city of Hangzhou.<\/p>\n

S: But, despite ML’s recommendation, I decided to go to X\u012bzàng, Tibet, X\u012bzàng, wher Mount Everest is.<\/p>\n

M: And Stuart says he’ll climb to the top of it! He’s just boasting, \u5439\u725b\uff0cchu\u012bniú.<\/p>\n

S: No, ML, I’m serious! W\u01d2 yào d\u0113ngshang Zh\u016bmùl\u01cengm\u01cef\u0113ng d\u01d0ng. <\/p>\n

M: In Chinese, we call Mount Everest ‘\u73e0\u7a46\u6717\u739b\u5cf0’, Zh\u016bmùl\u01cengm\u01cef\u0113ng. \u767b\uff0cDENG, d\u0113ng1, first tone, means ‘to climb’. And \u9876\uff0cDING, third tone, means ‘top’. So the whole sentence is –<\/p>\n

S: W\u01d2 yào d\u0113ngshang Zh\u016bmùl\u01cengm\u01cef\u0113ng d\u01d0ng. <\/p>\n
