M: And now, do you know the word for ‘year’? It’s \u5e74 NIAN nián, nián, 2nd tone, nián. Can you guess how to say ‘last year’ and ‘next year’? Try.<\/p>\n

S: We fooled them, ML! I bet most of you said something like xià nián and shàng nián. Wrong! Cuò le! Bú duì.<\/p>\n

M: Yes, ‘last year’ is \u53bb\u5e74 qù nián, qù nián . It’s the same qù as in w\u01d2 qù, I go, w\u01d2 qù. So, qù nián, literally something like ‘gone year’, qù nián, last year, qù nián.<\/p>\n

S: And ‘next year’. Just like in ‘tomorrow’, which is míng ti\u0101n, we say \u660e\u5e74 míng nián. Easy. Míng nián.<\/p>\n

S: That was a nice break! We’ve learnt, ‘last year’, which is ….?<\/p>\n

S: And ‘last month’.<\/p>\n
