When the enemy is too strong to attack directly, then attack something he holds dear. Know that in all things he cannot be superior. Somewher there is a gap in the armor, a weakness that can be attacked instead.<\/strong><\/strong><\/div>\n

The origin of this proverb is from the <\/span>Warring States Period (\u6218\u56fd\u65f6\u671f zhàn\u0261uóshíq\u012b)<\/strong>. The state of Wèi attacked Zhao and <\/span>laid siege (\u56f4\u653b wéi\u0261\u014dn\u0261)<\/strong> to its capital <\/span>Handan (\u90af\u90f8 Hánd\u0101n)<\/strong>. Zhào turned to Qí for help, but the Qí general Sun Bin determined it would be unwise to meet the army of Wèi head on, so he instead attacked their capital atDaliang (\u5927\u6881 Dàlián\u0261)<\/strong>. The army of Wèi <\/span>retreated (\u64a4\u56de chèhuí)<\/strong> in haste, and the tired troops were <\/span>ambushed (\u4f0f\u51fb fúj\u012b)<\/strong> and defeated at the <\/span>Battle of Guiling (\u6842\u9675\u4e4b\u6218 Guìlín\u0261zh\u012bzhàn)<\/strong>, with the Wèi general <\/span>Pang Juan (\u5e9e\u6d93 Pán\u0261 Ju\u0101n)<\/strong> slain on the field. Note that this campaign is also described explicitly in the Art of War of Master Sun Bin the younger.<\/p>\n

The idea here is to avoid a head on battle with a strong enemy, and instead strike at his weakness elsewher. This will force the strong enemy to retreat in order to support his weakness. Battling against the now tired and <\/span>low-morale (\u58eb\u6c14\u4f4e\u843d shìqì d\u012bluò)<\/strong> enemy will give a much higher chance of success.<\/p>\n
