He was one of the initiators of the Ancient Chinese Prose Movement of the Tang Dynasty and was the top among the Eight Great Prose Masters of the Tang and Song Dynasties. He was co-named as Han-Liu with Liu Zongyuan, because both of them were so im<em><\/em>portant in this literary stream. He enjoyed the titles of Giant of Articles and Originator of Writing.
