M: It is like \u4f60\u591a\u5927\u4e86, which we learnt in the previous lesson. We just add \u5e74\u7eaaNIAN JI niánji.<\/p>\n

S: Now, everybody ask me how old I am. Pretend I’m older than you.<\/p>\n

M: H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u767d\u5148\u751f\uff0c\u60a8\u591a\u5927\u5e74\u7eaa\u4e86\uff1fBái xi\u0101nsh\u0113ng, nín du\u014d dà niánjile?<\/p>\n

S: 100. \u4e00\u767e\u5c81 yì b\u01cei suì. Not really. Now ask old Ms. Zhao, that’s Mànlì, how old she is. ……. Méi cuò. \u8d75\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u60a8\u591a\u5927\u5e74\u7eaa\u4e86? Zhào n\u01dashì, nín du\u014ddà niánji le?<\/p>\n

M: 99. \u6211\u4e5d\u5341\u4e5d\u5c81 w\u01d2 j\u01d0u shí j\u01d0u suì.<\/p>\n

S: Now guess the meaning of this: \u4e5d\u5341\u4e5d\u5c81 j\u01d0u shí j\u01d0u suì, \u5979\u5df2\u7ecf\u5f88\u8001\u4e86\u3002T\u0101 y\u01d0j\u012bng h\u011bn l\u01ceole.<\/p>\n

M: Duì, w\u01d2 niánjì h\u011bndà. W\u01d2 y\u01d0j\u012bng h\u011bn l\u01ceole. What is niánji dà? Duìle, ‘age big’, meaning, of course, ‘old’, like l\u01ceo.<\/p>\n

S: But what a<\/em>bout asking the age of kids under ten or so? Easy. Listen.<\/p>\n

M: \u4f60\u51e0\u5c81\u4e86\uff1fn\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle?<\/p>\n
