S: Da4 jia1 hao3. Wo3 shi4 Stuart. Today we learn ‘husband’, ‘doctor’. Man Li suddenly married, jei2hun1 le, and is now Mrs. Chen. By the way, most Chinese women keep their own names after marriage. They don’t take their husband’s family name.<\/p>\n

M: And Stuart has changed from Mr. White, Bai2 xian1sheng1, to Mr. Yellow, Huang2 xian1sheng1.<\/p>\n

S: And we start with a knock on Mrs. Chen’s door. (knock knock)<\/p>\n

S: \u554a\uff0c\u4ed6\u662f\u5927\u592b ta1 shi4 dai4fu.<\/p>\n

M: Right. Let’s go over the new stuff. First, Stuart’s name today is Mr. Yellow, Huang2 xian1sheng1. Huang2 HUANG huang2, 2nd tone, means ‘yellow’, and it’s also a fairly common
family name.<\/p>\n

S: And we have Mrs. Chen, \u9648\u5973\u58eb \u9648 CHEN chen2, is also a common family name. I asked her, \u9648\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u4f60\u7684\u4e08\u592b\u5728\u5417<\/p>\n

S: \u5979\u751f\u75c5\u4e86\u5417?<\/p>\n

M: ta1 sheng1bing4 le ma? \u751f\u75c5 SHENG BING sheng1bing4, first tone fourth tone, to fall, or be, ill. Sheng1bing4.<\/p>\n

S: So everybody say, I’ve fallen ill, and sound really sick.<\/p>\n

M: Hen3hao3. \u6211\u751f\u75c5\u4e86 wo3 sheng1bing4 le.<\/p>\n

S: Or, you can simply say, \u6211\u75c5\u4e86 wo3 bing4 le.<\/p>\n

S: Now, two ways of saying ‘doctor’. Chen2 nv3shi4 told me –<\/p>\n

M: \u4ed6\u662f\u533b\u751f ta1 shi4 yi1sheng.<\/p>\n

S: \u554a\uff0c\u4ed6\u662f\u5927\u592b ta1 shi4 dai4fu.<\/p>\n

M: Dai4fu and yi1sheng both mean ‘doctor’. \u5927\u592b DAI FU dai4fu, and \u533b\u751f YI SHENG yi1sheng, yi2yang4.<\/p>\n

S: So everybody say, My elder sister is a doctor. Hen3 hao3. \u6211\u59d0\u59d0\u662f\u5927\u592b wo3 jie3jie shi4 dai4fu, or, wo3 jie3jie shi4 yi1sheng.<\/p>\n

M: And let’s finish with a short chat. Ting1, and chong2fu4.<\/p>\n

S: \u9648\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u6211\u542c\u8bf4\u4f60\u7684\u4e08\u592b\u662f\u5927\u592b wo3 ting1 shuo1 ni3 de zhang4fu shi4 dai4fu.<\/p>\n

M: \u662f\u7684\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u4e08\u592b\u662f\u533b\u751f shi4 de, wo3 de zhang4fu shi4 yi1sheng.<\/p>\n

S: \u4ed6\u73b0\u5728\u5728\u533b\u9662\u5417 ta1 xian4 zai4 zai4 yi1yuan4 ma?<\/p>\n
