Y: Hi, everyone, I’m Yajie. \u65e9\u4e0a\u597d. Last week we learned the numbers from 1 to 100. It’s very useful for communicating and getting around China.  This week we’ll mainly focus on how to use the numbers in sentences. Let’s check our key words of the day! <\/span>
************Key words of the day
Today we’ll put the numbers into their usages. For example, 2003\u5e74, the year 2003; 2005\u5e74, the year 2005. \u4e00\u6708, January; \u4e8c\u6708, February. \u4e09\u6708\uff0cMarch. All in today’s Chinese Studio.\u3000

Y: In Chinese, the four figures making up the year are read out as four individual numbers and “\u5e74” is put at the end. For example, this year, 2005\u5e74 (èr líng líng w\u01d4 nián), the year 2005.
C: 2005\u5e74 (èr líng líng w\u01d4 nián). <\/span>
Y: 2003\u5e74(èr líng líng s\u0101n nián), the year 2003.
C: 2003\u5e74 (èr líng líng s\u0101n nián). Then how do you say the year 2000?
Y: It’s \u4e24\u5343\u5e74 (li\u01ceng qi\u0101n nián). <\/span>
C: \u4e24\u5343\u5e74 (li\u01ceng qi\u0101n nián).
Y: Or you can say 2000\u5e74 (èr líng líng nián). What year were you born, Cam?
C: 1979 (yi jiu qi jiu nian).
Y:  Very good!  You were born in 1979.<\/p>\n

Y:  Now let’s learn the months. Mo<\/em>nth in Chinese is \u6708(yuè).  \u4e00\u6708\uff0c\u4e8c\u6708\uff0c…\uff0c
C: Wait, wait. Slow down…. So it’s\u4e00\u6708 (y\u012b yuè)\uff0c\u3000\u4e8c\u6708 (èr yuè). Right? <\/span>
Y: Yes. Exactly. Well, let me explain a little bit more. The name of the mo<\/em>nths are produced by combining the numbers 1 to 12 with “\u6708”. <\/span>
C: Ok. So March is \u4e09\u6708(s\u0101n yuè), and April is\u56db\u6708 (sì yuè).
Y: You are right.
C: In which mo<\/em>nth do you think Beijing is most beautiful? <\/span>
Y: I think it’s during May, \u4e94\u6708(w\u01d4yuè). <\/span>
C: Yes, wu yue is very beautiful.
Y: Yep. I’m waiting for\u4e94\u6708(w\u01d4yuè) when we can enjoy a long natio<\/em>nal holiday. <\/span>
C: Yes, I love holidays!  But there are also major holidays in shi yue and er yue.
Y: Yes, very good.  The summers are very hot.  And during\u516d\u6708, the temperature rises here in Beijing. But the hottest days are in the\u4e03\u6708 (qiyue).
C: Well, after\u4e03\u6708 (q\u012byuè) it’s \u516b\u6708 (b\u0101yuè), right?
Y: Exactly. And\u4e5d\u6708 (jiuyue) is my favorite month. After a long hot summer, the weather becomes cool, and we enjoy beautiful scenery. <\/span>
C: But I heard in\u5341\u6708 (shiyue) people in Beijing would like to go to Fragrant Hills in the west of Beijing to see the red leaves, right?
Y: Yes. That’s fantastic. <\/span>
C: I will go and have a look this year.<\/p>\n
