Yajie:  It’s time to perfect Chinese your way in o<\/em>nly five minutes a day.  Welcome to Chinese Studio everyone.  And Cam, this is a very special week.
Cam:  It sure is Yajie… it’s spring festival.. and I feel so bad…
Yajie:  Why?
Cam:  Because I want to wish you happy spring festival in Chinese, but that is one of the few things we haven’t learned yet!
Yajie:  Well, you are in luck… this is spring festival week, so we’ll learn all a<\/em>bout it on Chinese Studio.<\/p>\n

C: Yajie, I know the Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival. I’d like to know why and how to say it in Chinese.
Y: it’s called Spring Festival because it starts at the beginning of Spring. Cam, do you remember we learned the four seasons in our previous show.  Do you remember the Chinese for spring?
C: Ah… it’s chun1 tian1. <\/span>
Y: Yes, chun1 tian1 means spring, or just chun1 for short. And festival is jie2 in Chinese. <\/span>
C: jie2. <\/span>
Y: then spring festival is chun1 jie2.
C: chun1 jie2. <\/span>
Y: you may also hear people say “guo4 nian2”.
C: guo4 nian2, what is that?
Y: guo4 in Chinese has both the meaning of “pass-over” and “celebrate”
C; guo4.
Y: and the word “nian2” means “year” in Chinese.
C: nian2 <\/span>
Y: In the Chinese legend, nian2 was a terrible monster, and nian2 was afraid of red, flames and firecrackers. So when it’s spring festival, many people put red couplets on their front doors, and set off firecrackers to make loud noises. We’ll mention more a<\/em>bout it later. <\/span>
C: Interesting. <\/span>

C: what is the Chinese for lunar new year’s eve, <\/span>
Y: it’s called chu2 xi1, chu2 literally means remove or change, <\/span>
C: chu2,
Y: xi1 means night, <\/span>
C: xi1.
Y: chu2 xi1, implies that the old year ends at this night, and the new one begins tomorrow. <\/span>
C: chu2 xi1. the lunar new year’s eve. And when is it?
Y: it varies from year to year. This year chu2 xi1 is on January 28th of the Gregorian Calendar. <\/span>
C: then when will it end?
Y: it ends on the lantern festival, which is yuan2 xiao1 jie2. <\/span>
C: yuan2 xiao1 jie2. <\/span>
Y: It is customary to eat special sweet dumplings called yuanxiao, which symbolizes family reunios and people will watch lanterns during this festival. So it can also be called “deng1 jie2” since the word “deng1” means lantern. <\/span>
