All in today&rsquo;s Chinese Studio. \u3000<br \/>  ***********<\/p>\n<p>Yajie: Chinese currency is called Renminbi.&nbsp; It is composed of \u5143\u3001\u89d2, \u5206. <br \/>  Cam: \u5143(yuan), \u89d2(jiao), \u5206(fen).<br \/>  Yajie: one\u5143(yuan) equals ten\u89d2(jiao), and one\u89d2(jiao) equals10\u5206(fen).<br \/>  Cam: I heard that\u5143 is also called \u5757(kuai) in Chinese. For example \u516d\u5757 (liu kuai).<br \/>  Yajie: Yes. You are right. And in colloquial Chinese, \u89d2(jiao) is also called\u6bdb(mao).<\/p>\n<p>  Conversations:<\/p>\n<p>Yajie: From the co<em><\/em>nversations you may hear &ldquo;\u8fd9\u4e2a\u591a\u5c11\u94b1&rdquo; \uff1f<br \/>  Cam: What does that mean? <br \/>  Yajie: &ldquo;\u8fd9\u4e2a\u591a\u5c11\u94b1&rdquo; means how much is it? \u8fd9\u4e2ameans this in English. \u8fd9\u4e2a. Or you can say zh&egrave;ige.&nbsp; <br \/>  Cam: \u8fd9\u4e2a(zh&egrave;ige). <br \/>  Yajie:  \u591a\u5c11means how much. \u591a, d-u-o, the first tone; \u5c11,s-h-a-o, the third tone.  Literally, \u591ameans &ldquo;many or much&rdquo;, \u5c11 means &ldquo;few or little&rdquo;. But together  it means &ldquo;how much&hellip; ? or how many&hellip;?&rdquo;<br \/>  Cam: \u591a\u5c11 (duoshao). <br \/>  Yajie: \u94b1 means money. \u94b1, q-i-a-n, the second tone. It&rsquo;s the generic term for currency or money. <br \/>  Cam: \u94b1 (qian).<\/p>\n<p>Conversations:<\/p>\n<p>Cam: So Yajie, If I want to buy some apples, how do I say&ldquo;How much are these apples?&rdquo; <br \/>  Yajie: Good question. In Chinese &ldquo;How much are these apples\uff1f&rdquo; is pingguo duo sha chan\uff1f<br \/>  Cam: \u82f9\u679c\u591a\u5c11\u94b1 (p&iacute;nggu\u01d2 du\u014dshao qi&aacute;n)\uff1f<br \/>  Yajie: \u82f9\u679c is apple. <br \/>  Cam: \u82f9\u679c (p&iacute;nggu\u01d2)&nbsp; So I can say pingguo du\u014dshao qi&aacute;n\uff1f<br \/>  Yajie: Great! pingguo du\u014dshao qi&aacute;n\uff1f<\/p>\n<p>Cam:&nbsp; So Yajie, what would the answer be?<br \/>  Yajie:&nbsp; Well, let&rsquo;s say  the apples cost 3 yuan per half a kilogram.&nbsp; In Chinese, this is:&nbsp;  pingguo san kuai qian yi jin.
