  Dong natio<\/em>nality timber architectural and building skills are the most extraordinary form of ex<\/em>pression of traditio<\/em>nal ethnic folk culture in Sanjiang Dong Auto<\/em>nomous County, Guangxi Province. During the period of the Three Kingdoms, the ancestors of Dong natio<\/em>nality “built their houses against trees by erecting stilts to live above the ground, and such homes were called stilt-style architecture”. From then on, the timber architectural and building skills were developed as time went by. Represented by a wind-rain bridge and a drum tower, Sanjiang Dong natio<\/em>nality timber architecture has attractive appearance and brilliant craftsmanship. The entire house is built by means of tenon-and-mortise work instead of using any one iron nail in mortising, drilling, crossing of beam through holes, joining of arcs, erection of columns and co<\/em>nnection of tiebeams. The closely jointed house with robust structure has extremely high craft and artistic value.
  \u9f13\u697c\u53c8\u79f0“\u7f57\u6c49\u697c”\uff0c\u57cb\u5de8\u6728\u4e3a\u4e2d\u5fc3\u67f1\uff0c\u5efa\u6210\u5854\u5f62“\u72ec\u89d2\u697c”\uff0c\u77d7\u4e8e\u4f97\u5be8\u4e4b\u4e2d\uff0c\u7acb\u5730\u9876\u5929\uff0c\u6210\u4e3a\u4f97\u5bb6\u4eba\u7684\u7cbe\u795e\u8c61\u5f81\u3002\u98ce\u96e8\u6865\u6a2a\u5367\u6c5f\u4e0a\uff0c\u5728\u4f97\u65cf\u89c2\u5ff5\u4e2d\u662f\u6c9f\u901a\u9634\u9633\u4e24\u754c\u7684“\u751f\u547d\u4e4b\u6865”\u548c\u62a4\u5be8\u7eb3\u8d22\u7684“\u798f\u6865”\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u4e0d\u541d\u96d5\u7422\u4fee\u9970\uff0c\u4f7f\u5176\u96c6\u4ead\u3001\u5854\u3001\u5eca\u3001\u6865\u4e3a\u4e00\u4f53\uff0c\u58ee\u4e3d\u8f89\u714c\u3002\u697c\u3001\u6865\u4e0a\u7684\u5404\u79cd\u56fe\u6848\u53ca\u96d5\u6881\u753b\u680b\u5bc4\u6258\u4e86\u4f97\u65cf\u4eba\u6c11\u7948\u671b\u98ce\u8c03\u96e8\u987a\u3001\u4e94\u8c37\u4e30\u767b\u7684\u7f8e\u597d\u613f\u671b\u548c\u7f8e\u5b66\u8ffd\u6c42\uff0c\u662f\u4f97\u65cf\u6587\u5316\u7279\u6027\u7684\u96c6\u4e2d\u4f53\u73b0\u3002
  Drum tower, also called “Arhat Tower”, stands tall and upright in Dong stockaded villages. It has a large timber buried to the ground as the central column to form a pavilion-style “single-pillar tower”. It stands upright between heaven and earth and has become the spiritual symbol of the Dong nationality. In the eyes of the Dong people, the river-crossing wind-rain bridge is a “life bridge” l<\/em>inking the secular world with the nether world and the “blessed bridge” for protecting the villages and gathering the wealth. It is full of sculptures and decorations to integrate a pavilion, a tower, a gallery and a bridge together to present a spectacular and magnificent view. Various patterns, carved beams and painted rafters on the tower and the bridge express the Dong people’s good wishes for favorable weather and good harvest of all crops as well as their pursuit for aesthetics. They embody the overall cultural identity of the Dong nationality.
  \u4f97\u65cf\u4eba\u662f\u5929\u751f\u7684\u827a\u672f\u5bb6\uff0c\u6c11\u95f4\u5de5\u5320\u7684\u5efa\u7b51\u624d\u80fd\u5341\u5206\u9ad8\u8d85\u3002\u4ed6\u4eec\u5efa\u9020\u697c\u3001\u6865\u548c\u6c11\u5c45\u65f6\u4e0d\u7528\u4e00\u5f20\u56fe\u7eb8\uff0c\u6574\u4e2a\u7ed3\u6784\u70c2\u719f\u4e8e\u5fc3\uff0c\u4ec5\u51ed\u7b80\u5355\u7684\u7af9\u7b7e\u4e3a\u6807\u5c3a\uff0c\u9760\u72ec\u7279\u7684“\u58a8\u5e08\u6587”\u4e3a\u8bbe\u8ba1\u6807\u6ce8\uff0c\u4f7f\u7528\u666e\u901a\u7684\u6728\u5320\u5de5\u5177\u548c\u6728\u6599\u5c31\u80fd\u5236\u9020\u51fa\u6837\u5f0f\u5404\u5f02\u3001\u9020\u578b\u7f8e\u89c2\u7684\u697c\u3001\u6865\uff0c\u8bbe\u8ba1\u4e4b\u7cbe\u5de7\uff0c\u9020\u578b\u4e4b\u7f8e\u89c2\uff0c\u5747\u4ee4\u4eba\u53f9\u4e3a\u89c2\u6b62\u3002
  Dong people are born artists. Local craftsmen have superb architectural skills. They bear the entire structure in mind very well without using drawings and build towers and bridges with diversified patterns and beautiful appearance with common carpenter’s tools and timbers, and o<\/em>nly use simple bamboo sticks as rulers and distinctive “symbols” on a piece of wood as design markings. The exquisite design and attractive appearance are acclaimed as the acme of perfection.
  \u4ee4\u4eba\u62c5\u5fe7\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u76ee\u524d\u7531\u4e8e\u4f97\u65cf\u5efa\u7b51\u5de5\u5320\u540e\u7ee7\u4e4f\u4eba\uff0c\u6728\u6750\u6765\u6e90\u532e\u4e4f\uff0c\u52a0\u4e4b\u6728\u6784\u5efa\u7b51\u9632\u706b\u80fd\u529b\u6781\u5f31\uff0c\u6613\u635f\u6bc1\u800c\u96be\u518d\u751f\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u4f97\u65cf\u6728\u6784\u5efa\u7b51\u53ca\u76f8\u5173\u6280\u827a\u5b58\u5728\u7740\u5ef6\u7eed\u7684\u5371\u673a\u3002\u53ea\u6709\u52a0\u5f3a\u62a2\u6551\u548c\u4fdd\u62a4\u5de5\u4f5c\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u4f7f\u7edd\u5999\u7684\u4f97\u65cf\u6728\u6784\u5efa\u7b51\u6280\u827a\u4e16\u4ee3\u4f20\u627f\u4e0b\u53bb\u3002
  Nevertheless, there are co<\/em>ncerns that there is no successor of the craftsmen for architectural building of Dong natio<\/em>nality and timbers are in deficiency. What’s more, timber architecture may easily catch fire and would be hard to restore if it is damaged. Therefore, it would be difficult to pass down the Dong natio<\/em>nality timber architectural buildings and relevant skills. o<\/em>nly if maintenance and protection are strengthened, the fabulous Dong natio<\/em>nality timber architectural building skills would be handed down generation by generation.
