It is part of the canon of the Sishu \u56db\u4e66 &quot;Four Books&quot;, to which it was added as integral Confucian writing on the order and harmony of society.<\/p>\n<p>  \t<strong>Exemplarious translation:<br \/>  \t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div>\u793c\u8bb0\uff1b\uff13\uff19\uff0e\uff08\uff14\uff12\uff0e\uff09\u5927\u5b66<br \/>  \t&bull; \u5b50\u7a0b\u5b50\u66f0\uff1a\u300c\u5927\u5b66\uff0c\u5b54\u6c0f\u4e4b\u9057\u4e66\uff0c\u800c\u521d\u5b66\u5165\u5fb7\u4e4b\u95e8\u4e5f\uff0e\u300d\u4e8e\u4eca\u53ef\u89c1\u53e4\u4eba\u4e3a\u5b66\u6b21\u7b2c\u8005\uff0c\u72ec\u8d56\u6b64\u7bc7\u4e4b\u5b58\uff0c\u800c\u8bba\u3001\u5b5f\u6b21\u4e4b\uff0e\u5b66\u8005\u5fc5\u7531\u662f\u800c\u5b66\u7109\uff0c\u5219\u5eb6\u4e4e\u5176\u4e0d\u5dee\u77e3\uff0e<\/div>\n<div>Zi Chengzi said: &quot;The Great Learning is a writing handed down by Confucius; and it is the entrance gate for everyone who begins to study virtuousness.&quot; From these words, we can learn that people in old times first started to study solely by relying on this book; everything depended on its existance, and only after it, they started to read the Analects and the Mengzi. Everyone engaging in studies has to begin his studies with this book to cover everying that he does not want to leave out.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div>\uff11\uff0e \u5927\u5b66\u4e4b\u9053\uff0c\u5728\u660e\u660e\u5fb7\uff0c\u5728\u4eb2\u6c11\uff0c\u5728\u6b62\u4e8e\u81f3\u5584\u3002\u77e5\u6b62\u800c\u540e\u6709\u5b9a\uff0c\u5b9a\u800c\u540e\u80fd\u9759\uff0c\u9759\u800c\u540e\u80fd\u5b89\uff0c\u5b89\u800c\u540e\u80fd\u8651\uff0c\u8651\u800c\u540e\u80fd\u5f97\u3002\u7269\u6709\u672c\u672b\uff0c\u4e8b\u6709\u7ec8\u59cb\uff0c\u77e5\u6240\u5148\u540e\uff0c\u5219\u8fd1\u9053\u77e3\u3002<\/div>\n<div>What the Great Learning taches, is to illustrate illustrious virtue; to renovate (love?) the people; and to rest in the highest excellence. The point where to rest being known, the object of pursuit is then determined, a calm uperturbedness may be attained to. To that calmness there will succeed a tranquil repose. In that repse there may be careful deliberation, and that deliberation will be followed by the attainment of the desired end. Things have their root and their branches. Affairs have their end and their beginning. Wishing to order well their states, they first regulated their families. Wishing to regulate their families, they first cultivated their persons. Wishing to cultivate their persons, they first rectified their hearts. Wishing to rectify their hearts, they first sought to be sincere in their thoughts. Wishing to be sincere in their thoughts, they first extended to the utmost their knowledge. Their knowledge being complete, their thoughts were sincere. Their thoughts being sincere, their hearts were then rectified. Their hearts being rectified, their persons were cultivated. Their persons being cultivated, their families were regulated. Their families being regulated, their states were rightly governed. Their states being rightly governed, the whole kingdom was made tranquil and happy. From the Son of Heaven down to the mass of the people, all must consider the cultivation of the person the root of everything besides. It cannot be, when the root is neglected, that what should spring from it be well ordered. It never has been the case that what was of great importance has been slightly cared for, and, at the same time, that what was of slight importance has been greatly cared for. This is meant by talking of the knowing the root of things, and this is meant by completion of knowledge.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p><div>&bull; \u53f3\u7ecf\u4e00\u7ae0\uff0c\u76d6\u5b54\u5b50\u4e4b\u8a00\uff0c\u800c\u66fe\u5b50\u8ff0\u4e4b\uff0e\u5176\u4f20\u5341\u7ae0\uff0c\u5219\u66fe\u5b50\u4e4b\u610f\u800c\u95e8\u4eba\u8bb0\u4e4b\u4e5f\uff0e&#8230;<\/div>\n<div>The first chapter of the Great Learning are the words of Confucius, written down by his disciple Zengzi. The chapter Taijia (here: Dajia) says: &quot;He kept his eye continually on the bright requirements of Heaven&quot;. The Canon of Emperor [Yao] says: &quot;He made the able and virtuous distinguished&quot;. All these citations enlighten its meaning.
