M: Because today we’ll learn a lot of stuff. \u56e0\u4e3a\uff0c\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u4eec\u5c06\u8981\u5b66\u4e60\u5f88\u591a\u4e1c\u897f\u3002Y\u012bnwéi, j\u012bnti\u0101n w\u01d2men ji\u0101ngyào xuéxí h\u011bn du\u014d d\u014dngxi. \u4e1c\u897f\uff0cDONG XI, stuff.<\/p>\n

S: Or things. Fine! So what are we going to learn?<\/p>\n

M: Well, last lesson we taught our listeners \u590f\u5929 and \u79cb\u5929\uff0cwhich mean ‘summer’ and ‘autumn’. Now we’ll learn how to say ‘winter’ and ‘spring’ in Chinese.<\/p>\n

S: \u51ac\u5929\uff0cDONG TIAN, d\u014dngti\u0101n, both 1st tone, is winter. Out of interest, in Chinese there is a word \u51bb\uff0calso spelled DONG but is in the fourth tone, which means freezing.<\/p>\n

M: And \u6625\u5929, CHUN TIAN, ch\u016bnti\u0101n, means ‘spring’.<\/p>\n

S: So now we’ve learned all the four seasons of a year. They are –<\/p>\n

M: Chun ti\u0101n, spring, chun ti\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: xià ti\u0101n, summer, xià ti\u0101n.<\/p>\n

M: qi\u016bti\u0101n, autumn, qi\u016bti\u0101.<\/p>\n

S: And d\u014dngti\u0101n, winter, d\u014dngti\u0101n. Hey, that seems pretty easy!<\/p>\n

M: Last lesson Stuart told me that he had heard a<\/em>bout, \u542c\u8bf4\u8fc7\uff0ct\u012bngshu\u014d guò, quite a few places of interest. However, he hasn’t had a chance to visit them yet.<\/p>\n

S: That’s right. \u6211\u542c\u8bf4\u8fc7\u5f88\u591a\u98ce\u666f\u540d\u80dc\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4e00\u76f4\u6ca1\u6709\u673a\u4f1a\u53bb\u3002W\u01d2 t\u012bngshu\u014d guò h\u011bndu\u014d f\u0113ngj\u01d0ngmíngshèng, dànshì yìzhí méiy\u01d2u j\u012bhuì qù.<\/p>\n

M: F\u0113ngj\u01d0ng míngshèng. F\u0113ngj\u01d0ng, FENG JING, 1st tone 3rd tone, f\u0113ngj\u01d0ng, ‘scenery’. And míngshèng, MING SHENG, míngshèng is ‘place of interest’.<\/p>\n

S: Yìzhí, we know is ‘always’, yìzhí. So yìzhí méiy\u01d2u means ‘always not have’, or, in real English, ‘never have’.
So, ‘I never have a chance’ is ?… Duì le, w\u01d2 yìzhí méiy\u01d2u j\u012bhuì. w\u01d2 yìzhí méiy\u01d2u j\u012bhuì. \u673a\u4f1a is of course ‘chance’, ‘opportunity’.<\/p>\n

M: Right. Now here’s the whole sentence, \u6211\u542c\u8bf4\u8fc7\u5f88\u591a\u98ce\u666f\u540d\u80dc\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u4e00\u76f4\u6ca1\u6709\u673a\u4f1a\u53bb\u3002I’ve heard a<\/em>bout many scenic spots and places of interest, but never got a chance to visit them. W\u01d2 t\u012bngshu\u014d guò h\u011bndu\u014d f\u0113ngj\u01d0ngmíngshèng, dànshì yìzhí méiy\u01d2u j\u012bhuì qù.<\/p>\n

S: What a pity! You bet I feel sad a<\/em>bout that, ML.<\/p>\n

M: Don’t worry, Stuart. As I told you, \u6211\u548c\u4f60\u4e00\u8d77\u53bb\uff0c\u6211\u53ef\u4ee5\u505a\u4f60\u7684\u5bfc\u6e38\u3002W\u01d2 hé n\u01d0 yìq\u01d0 qù, w\u01d2 k\u011by\u01d0 zuò n\u01d0 de d\u01ceoyóu.<\/p>\n

S: Aha! Travel with me and be my guide! Really? Zh\u0113nde ma? Zh\u0113n de ma?<\/p>\n

M: Of course. \u5f53\u7136\u3002\u5f53\u7136\u662f\u771f\u7684\u3002D\u0101ngrán, d\u0101ngrán shì zh\u0113n de<\/p>\n

S: Wonderful! ML hé w\u01d2 yìq\u01d0 qù, ‘ML and I together go’, ML hé w\u01d2 yìq\u01d0 qù. Go together, yìq\u01d0 qù, yìq\u01d0 qù.<\/p>\n

M: And I can be your guide. \u6211\u53ef\u4ee5\u505a\u4f60\u7684\u5bfc\u6e38\u3002\u5bfc\u6e38\uff0cDAO YOU, 3rd tone 2nd tone, d\u01ceoyóu, means guide. Zuò, ZUO, zuò, 4th tone, can mean ‘do’ or ‘make’, here it means ‘be’, or ‘serve as’. \u6211\u53ef\u4ee5\u505a\u4f60\u7684\u5bfc\u6e38\u3002W\u01d2 k\u011by\u01d0 zuò n\u01d0 de d\u01ceoyóu.<\/p>\n

S: Zhen1 de ma? Really? Zhen1 de ma? Tài h\u01ceo le! Wonderful! Great! Tài h\u01ceo le! This is a very common way ex<\/em>pression.<\/p>\n
