M: I found Stuart’s, (Chinese name, Bài J\u01d6nshì), wallet. \u6211\u627e\u5230\u4e86\u767d\u541b\u58eb\u7684\u94b1\u5305 w\u01d2 zh\u01ceodàole Bái J\u01d6nshì de qiánb\u0101o.<\/p>\n

S: My wallet is in my bag \u6211\u7684\u94b1\u5305\u5728\u6211\u7684\u5305\u91cc\u9762 w\u01d2de qiánb\u0101o zài w\u01d2de b\u0101o l\u01d0mian. S: Now, back to ‘w\u01d2 y\u012bngg\u0101i b\u01ce t\u0101 fàng zài w\u01d2de k\u01d2udài l\u01d0’, b\u01ce t\u0101 fàng zài k\u01d2udài l\u01d0. \u628a BA b\u01ce\uff0cis a widely used preposition, but quite difficult to explain.<\/p>\n

M: Well, the word ‘\u628a’ has no actual meaning. But basically it is used when the object is the receiver of the action of the ensuing verb.<\/p>\n

S: That sounds very complicated! Actually I find it makes sense to understand the ‘b\u01ce’ as meaning ‘to hold’. So we ‘hold’ something, and then do something with it – like put it, forget it, or whatever. It’s a very common word. A few examples and you’ll get the idea.<\/p>\n

M: \u597d\u4e3b\u610f\u3002Good idea! Ok, now remember, \u653efàng, means ‘to place’ or ‘put’.<\/p>\n

S: And ‘b\u01ce something fàng zài somewher’, is a very common structure in Chinese. For example, ‘put the glass on the table’. \u628a\u676f\u5b50\u653e\u5728\u684c\u5b50\u4e0a b\u01ce bèizi fàng zài zhu\u014dzi shàng.<\/p>\n

M: So try to say, "put the coffee on the table’. Méicuò. \u628a\u5496\u5561\u653e\u5728\u684c\u5b50\u4e0a b\u01ce k\u0101f\u0113i fàng zài zhu\u014dzi shàng.<\/p>\n

S: Very good. Time for a break.<\/p>\n

S: Just one more new word, \u53e3\u888b KOU DAI k\u01d2udài. K\u01d2u means ‘mouth’ or ‘opening’, and dài means ‘sack’ or ‘bag’. And k\u01d2udài means ‘pocket’, k\u01d2udài<\/p>\n

M: So try to say, ‘put it in your pocket’. H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u628a\u5b83\u653e\u5728\u4f60\u7684\u53e3\u888b\u91cc b\u01ce t\u0101 fàng zài n\u01d0 de k\u01d2udài l\u01d0.<\/p>\n

S: So, we’ve learnt, \u5e94\u8be5 ‘should’ or ‘ought to’ y\u012bngg\u0101i.<\/p>\n
