S: How a<\/em>bout things like, ‘next week’, ‘last week’, and we’ll take a look at two very useful words, \u4e0a shàng and \u4e0bxià.<\/p>\n

M: H\u01ceo zhúyì.<\/p>\n

S: We’ll start with the chat we had at the end of the previous lesson. Y\u012b èr s\u0101n, k\u0101ishì.<\/p>\n

M: Stuart, what’s the time now? \u73b0\u5728\u51e0\u70b9xiànzài jídi\u01cen\uff1f<\/p>\n

S: Five o’clock. \u4e94\u70b9wú di\u01cen. I’m a<\/em>bout to get off work. \u6211\u9a6c\u4e0a\u8981\u4e0b\u73ed\u4e86 wó m\u01ceshàng yào xià b\u0101n le.<\/p>\n

M: H\u01ceo. Xiànzài w\u01d2men xiàb\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: Ok, everybody. Now say, no help from us, ‘Today, I don’t go to work’. …<\/p>\n

M: Hén h\u01ceo. \u4eca\u5929\u6211\u4e0d\u4e0a\u73ed j\u012bn ti\u0101n w\u01d2 bú shàng b\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: Now say, ‘Now I get off work’.<\/p>\n

M: F\u0113icháng h\u01ceo. \u73b0\u5728\u6211\u4e0b\u73ed xiànzài w\u01d2 xià b\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: And we know that xià kè means to ‘leave class, lesson’s over’ So can you guess how to say, ‘now we go to class’?<\/p>\n

M: Duìle. \u73b0\u5728\u6211\u4eec\u4e0a\u8bfexiànzài w\u01d2men shàng kè.<\/p>\n

S: And can you remember how to say, ‘I get in the car’?<\/p>\n

M: Duìle! \u6211\u4e0a\u8f66 w\u01d2 shàng ch\u0113.<\/p>\n

S: And, ‘I get out of the car’?<\/p>\n

M: F\u0113ichángh\u01ceo! \u6211\u4e0b\u8f66 w\u01d2 xià ch\u0113.<\/p>\n

S: And, in a lift, for example, how do you say, ‘I go up’?<\/p>\n

M: Méi cuò. \u6211\u4e0a\u53bb w\u01d2 shàng qù.<\/p>\n

S: Now, ‘We go down’.<\/p>\n

M: Right! \u6211\u4eec\u4e0b\u53bb w\u01d2men xià qù.<\/p>\n

S: Shàng and xià. \u4e0a SHANG shàng means all sorts of things, like ‘on’,‘upper’, ‘up’, ‘preceding’, and ‘last’, but most of the meanings are co<\/em>nceptually related.<\/p>\n

M: And \u4e0b XIA xia, also means all sorts of things, like ‘under’, ‘lower’, ‘down’, ‘following’ and ‘next’.<\/p>\n

S: And, yes, you’ve guessed it. When we use shàng to say one thing, we often use xià to say the opposite.<\/p>\n

M: Now, put your thinking caps on! I’ll say, ‘last week I went to Shanghai’. Here goes. \u4e0a\u4e2a\u661f\u671f\u6211\u53bb\u4e86\u4e0a\u6d77 shàng ge x\u012bngq\u012b w\u01d2 qù le Shàngh\u01cei.<\/p>\n

S: Now, all of you guess how to say, ‘next week I go to X\u012b\u0101n’.<\/p>\n

M: Congratulations! \u606d\u559c g\u014dngx\u01d0. Yes, it’s \u4e0b\u4e2a\u661f\u671f\u6211\u53bb\u897f\u5b89 xià ge x\u012bngq\u012b w\u01d2 qù X\u012b\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: So, ‘last week’, \u4e0a\u4e2a\u661f\u671f shàng ge x\u012bngq\u012b. Here we can also omit the little classifier ‘ge’ and just say, shàng x\u012bngq\u012b.<\/p>\n

M: And ‘next week’. \u4e0b\u4e2a\u661f\u671fxià ge x\u012bngq\u012b, or xià x\u012bngq\u012b.<\/p>\n

S: Ok, Everybody say, ‘Now we finish the lesson’.<\/p>\n

M: H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u73b0\u5728\u6211\u4eec\u4e0b\u8bfe xiànzài w\u01d2men xiàkè.<\/p>\n

S: Now say, ‘tomorrow we go to class again’.<\/p>\n
