He was a native of Xiayang in the Western Han Dynasty (Now Hancheng, Shaanxi province or Hejin, Shanxi province). He is regarded as the father of Chinese historiography for his greatest contribution, Records of the Grand Historian (originally named Taishi Gongshu), a Jizhuanti &#8211; style general history of China, covering more than three thousand years from the Yellow Emperor to the Emperor Wu of Han (101BC, i.e, the fourth year of Emperor Wu period).
