He was a native of Wuyuan County, Huizhou Prefecture, East Jiangnan Area (what is now Wuyuan in Jiangxi province) in the Southern Song Dynasty. At the age of 19, he passed the Dianshi (final imperial examination) and was one of the top three participants. He was the Anfushi (local governor) of South Jinhu Area, and then was the Daizhi (imperial attendant) of the Baowen Cabinet. During his reign, he executed edicts, punished treacherous officials and was known for his outstanding governance. He was the most famous Confucian, philosopher, thinker, educator and poet of the Southern Song Dynasty, and the representative of the Fujian School.
