Four Pillars of Destiny – 八字 Ba Zi
Even today, when people talk about Chinese Astrology, it is a common misconception that the animals assigned by year are the only signs of the zodiac. Many western descriptions of Chinese astrology draw solely on this system. In fact, there are also animal signs assigned by month (called inner animals) and hours of the day (called secret animals).
Four Pillars of Destiny is a Chinese term that comprises of four elements of a person’s destiny or fate. The four components are taken from the moment of birth. They are the year, month, day, and time (hour). Each of these elements are important in Chinese astrology, the zodiac and fortune telling.

Chinese Dragon VS. Western Dragon
The Chinese dragon is a far different feast from its Western counterpart. Smaug from J.R.R.Tolkien's "The Hobbit" is perhaps the most widely known dragon from recent Western fiction, a cruel, avaricious and bloodthirsty creature whose lair under the Lonely Mountain identifies him as a creature of the earth. Tolkien drew much of his inspiration for Smaug from the dragon in the Old English epic of "Beowulf", penned more than a thousand years earlier, which gives some indication of depth of the European tradition of portraying dragons as bad news.
Cupping（拔罐báɡuàn）
Cupping (拔罐 báɡuàn) is a type of Chinese massage that consists of attaching several hollowed-out glass "cups" to the body. These cups work to massage soft tissue, by pulling and stretching the skin. This occurs through a vacuuming process in which these cups literally adhere to the person's body, "sucking" skin up into the cups.

Marrying in China
The author and his wife at the Marriage Registry of Jiangsu province. Monday 8th February 2010 or should I say to use Chinese date format, 2010 February 8th had been preceded by much bureaucratic to-ing and fro-ing. Back in Australia, there were 3 trips into the Brisbane Registry of Births, Deaths & Marriages to get a certificate saying there was no record of a marriage since my divorce. You have to love the bureaucratic doublespeak. There is "no record" but the marriage might have happened off the record? Then there was the Australia consulate in Shanghai who were helpful but couldn't give direct advice about what Jiangsu province really wanted. So I opted for a few extra documents just in case. Oh yes you get there early and then a man who doesn't speak English (go figure – it's the Australian consulate!) says come back at 3pm when they do work.
