The establishment of the university is aimed at fostering high-level personnel of science and technology absolutely necessary for the development of the national economy, national defense construction, and education in science and technology. The university was founded in Beijing in September of 1958. Mr. Guo Moruo(郭沫若:Guō Mòruò) is the first president of the university. The establishment was hailed as "A Major Event in the History of Chinese Education and Science".

春已归来,看美人头上,袅袅春幡。Spring is back, on all the maidens' heads the springtime papercuts.
无端风雨,未肯收尽余寒。Ceaseless wind and rain, and still a little bit of cold.
年时燕子,料今宵,梦到西园。The seasonn when the swallows breed chicks is come, but in the night, I walk in dream in Kaifeng's West Garden.
浑未办,黄柑荐酒,更传青韭堆盘。No finished yet the orange liqueur, we first serve the green scallions plate.

Leshan Giant Buddha:乐山大佛
The Leshan Giant Buddha(乐山大佛Lèshān Dàfó), which was chiseled on the cliff where the Min River(岷江Mín Jiāng), the Qingyi River (青衣江Qīngyī Jiāng)and the Dadu River(大渡河Dàdù Hé)flow together, is the world's largest stone-carved Buddha so far. The giant sitting Buddha was proposed to be built by Monk Haitong in a bid to weaken the flow of water and reduce water disaster. It was carved from 713 AD and not completed until 803 AD, costing an unprecedented amount of manpower and material resources. On December 16th of 1996, this massive spectacular Buddha statue was officially authorized as "World Cultural and Natural Heritage" and was placed on the World Heritage List by the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

The Bund:外滩
Located along the Huangpu River(黄浦江Huángpǔ Jiāng), the Bund shows off Shanghai’s outstanding foreign buildings, most of which were erected before 1937. To the Europeans, the Bund was Shanghai’s answer to Wall Street. In the 1930s, the string of buildings hosted the city's financial and commercial centers, and the world's greatest banks and trading empires established a base here.
