S: First we revise some ways to ask and tell someone’s age.<\/p>\n

S: Eighteen. Shí b\u0101 suì. \u5341\u516b\u5c81\u3002<\/p>\n

S: \u4f60\u4e0d\u76f8\u4fe1\u5417 n\u01d0 bù xi\u0101ngxìn ma? ok, thirty-seven. \u4e09\u5341\u4e03\u5c81 s\u0101n shí q\u012b suì.<\/p>\n

M: So, the simplest way to ask someone’s age is \u4f60\u591a\u5927\u4e86 n\u01d0 du\u014d dà le? And we usually put the little le at the end. How old are you \u4f60\u591a\u5927\u4e86? Say it, everybody, n\u01d0 du\u014d dà le?<\/p>\n

S: Twenty-two \u4e09\u5341\u4e09\u5c81 s\u0101n shí s\u0101n suì.<\/p>\n

M: Don’t forget, we use \u5c81 SUI suì, when giving someone’s age.<\/p>\n

S: And when asking someone’s age, we can put in ‘this year’ j\u012bn nián, as in –<\/p>\n

M: Stuart, \u4f60\u4eca\u5e74\u591a\u5927\u4e86 n\u01d0 j\u012bn nián du\u014d dà le?<\/p>\n

S: Thirty \u6211\u4eca\u5e74\u56db\u5341\u5c81 w\u01d2 j\u012bn nián sì shí suì.<\/p>\n

M: He’s aging very quickly.<\/p>\n

S: And remember, we usually use ‘n\u01d0 du\u014d dà le’, or ‘n\u01d0 j\u012bn nián du\u014d dà le’ to ask someone roughly your age or younger.<\/p>\n

M: Now, say, on your own, Mrs. Wang, who’s not much older than you, how old are you?<\/p>\n

S: I’m sure you said, \u738b\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u4f60\u591a\u5927\u4e86 Wáng n\u01dashì, n\u01d0 du\u014d dà le?<\/p>\n

M: Or maybe you said, \u738b\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u4f60\u4eca\u5e74\u591a\u5927\u4e86 Wáng n\u01dashì, n\u01d0 j\u012bn nián du\u014d dà le?<\/p>\n

S: Or, a bit more formal, and if Mrs Wang is no spring chicken \u738b\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u60a8\u4eca\u5e74\u591a\u5927\u5e74\u7eaa\u4e86 Wang n\u01dashì, n\u01d0 j\u012bn nián du\u014d dà niánjì le?<\/p>\n

M: Everybody now ask Mrs. Li, who is much older than you, her age.<\/p>\n

S: H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u674e\u5973\u58eb\uff0c\u60a8\u591a\u5927\u5e74\u7eaa\u4e86 L\u01d0 N\u01dashì, nín du\u014d dà niánjì le?<\/p>\n

M: And answer, I’m 84. Méi cuò. \u6211\u516b\u5341\u56db\u5c81 w\u01d2 b\u0101 shí sì suì.<\/p>\n

S: B\u0101 shí sì suì! \u5979\u5df2\u7ecf\u5f88\u8001\u4e86 h\u011bn l\u01ceo, very old. T\u0101 y\u01d0j\u012bng h\u011bn l\u01ceole.<\/p>\n

M: Duì, w\u01d2 niánjì dàle.<\/p>\n

S: But what a<\/em>bout asking the age of kids under ten or so? Easy. Listen.<\/p>\n

M: \u4f60\u51e0\u5c81\u4e86\uff1f n\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle?<\/p>\n

S: \u6211\u516b\u5c81 w\u01d2 b\u0101 suì.<\/p>\n

M: N\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle? Remember the j\u01d0 in, What’s the time now, \u73b0\u5728\u51e0\u70b9\u4e86 xiànzài j\u01d0di\u01cenle, wher the j\u01d0 means ‘how many’? Well, it means a similar thing here. N\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle? You how many years, how old are you.<\/p>\n

S: And remember, ‘n\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle?’ – is for people under ten or so.<\/p>\n

M: So, Stuart, n\u01d0 j\u01d0 suìle?<\/p>\n

S: W\u01d2 j\u01d0 suì! Humph! ML, ní j\u012bn nián j\u01d0 suìle?<\/p>\n
