Cam: Hello, everyone, I’m Cam. It’s good to be back.  This daily show will teach Chinese at the elementary level, which is perfect for me, because I’m just learning Chinese myself! Now Yajie, last time we learnt greetings. What’s today’s topic?<\/p>\n

Y: After you’ve greeted someone, you are supposed to introduce yourself, or introduce your friends. This is done in English too, right?<\/p>\n

Today we’ll learn a few of popular introduction ex<\/em>pressions. \u4f60\u597d\uff0c\u6211\u53ebYuanbao\uff0c\u662f\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba\u3002\u4f60\u597d,\u6211\u662fYajie\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u3002\u8fd9\u4f4d\u662fLucy, \u6765\u81ea\u7f8e\u56fd\u3002All in today’s Chinese Studio.  <\/span>

Y: Introductions happen between two people who meet for the first time. It can also happen among three happen or more.  In this case, the person will introduce his or her friends as well. Let’s first learn how to introduce yourself. \u4f60\u597d,\u6211\u662fYajie\uff0c\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u3002<\/p>\n

Cam: \u4f60\u597d(n\u01d0 h\u01ceo)\uff0c\u6211\u53eb(w\u01d2 jiào)Yuanbao\uff0c\u662f\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba(shì Ji\u0101nádà rén)\u3002<\/p>\n

Y: First you can say your name, and then your nationality. \u6211\u662fYajie. Wo shi Yajie. Wo, I. Shi, is. \u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba, Canadian. Wo is the same as “wo hen hao” – I’m very good, that we learned last week.  Wo is in the third tone. W\u01d2.<\/p>\n

Cam: W\u01d2.<\/p>\n

Y: \u662f(shì) is equal to the meaning of “be” in English, but there is no change of time. You can just use it. There is no need to co<\/em>nsider the time change or the form of the subject, no matter the single or plural, or the first person or the second person. <\/p>\n

Cam: Does that mean I can say “\u4f60\u662f\u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba\u5417” (n\u01d0 shì Zh\u014dngguó rén ma)?<\/p>\n

Y: Yes. Of course you can. Now let me explain how to express one’s nationality. You can put the name of the country in front of the Chinese character \u4eba. For instance, you can say \u7f8e\u56fd\u4eba, American. \u7f8e\u56fd, M\u011biguó, America. \u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba, Ji\u0101nádà rén, Canadian. \u52a0\u62ff\u5927, Canada. \u4e2d\u56fd\u4eba, Zh\u014dngguó rén, Chinese.<\/p>\n

Y: There are two ways of expressing the natio<\/em>nality of the person. You can say\u6211\u662f\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba(w\u01d2 shì Ji\u0101nádà rén), W\u01d2 shì Ji\u0101nádà rén. Or you can say. \u6211\u6765\u81ea\u52a0\u62ff\u5927, W\u01d2 láizì Ji\u0101nádà. I’m from Canada. \u6765\u81ea, from.<\/p>\n

Cam: (repeat) \u6765\u81ea. (láizì). \u6211\u662f\u52a0\u62ff\u5927\u4eba(W\u01d2 shì Ji\u0101nádà rén). \u6211\u6765\u81ea\u52a0\u62ff\u5927(W\u01d2 láizì Ji\u0101nádà).<\/p>\n

Cam: Yajie, do you know how to introduce one to another? For example, suppose you and Lucy are with me. How can I introduce Lucy to you? <\/p>\n

Y: Well, you can say “\u8fd9\u4f4d\u662fLucy, \u6765\u81ea\u7f8e\u56fd”. \u8fd9\u4f4d, this one. Zhè wèi, or you can say zhèi wèi.<\/p>\n

Cam: It seems easy. How should Lucy co<\/em>ntinue with the conversation?<\/p>\n

Y: Then Lucy can deliver the self-introduction. So does the other person.<\/p>\n
