<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Yajie: In oral Chinese we usually say “\u4e1c\u8fb9”\u3002“\u8fb9”means side. Bian is said in the neutral tone. In common speech, some syllables are pro<\/em>nounced both light and short. Such a tone is called the neutral tone. So it’s “\u4e1c\u8fb9”, meaning the eastern side or the eastern direction, d\u014dngbian.<\/span>

<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Yajie: It’s \u5728\u4e1c\u8fb9\u3002For example, you can say:\u3002Japan is to the east of China. \u65e5\u672c\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u4e1c\u8fb9<\/span>

<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Yajie: It’s \u897f\uff0cxi, the first tone. Also\u897f\u8fb9, x\u012bbian. Here the pro<\/em>nunciation of \u8fb9 is the same as that of \u4e1c\u8fb9. <\/span><\/span>

<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Yajie: Right, and you can say: \u6cf0\u56fd\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u5357\u8fb9\u3002Thailand is to the south of China.<\/span>
<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Cam: \u6cf0\u56fd\u5728\u4e2d\u56fd\u7684\u5357\u8fb9(Thaiguo zai Zho<\/em>ngguo de nanbian.) We have north left now. What’s “north” in Chinese?<\/span>
<\/em>portant; float: none;”>Yajie: North is \u5317\uff0cb\u011bi third tone. That’s the \u5317of \u5317\u4eac which means capital in the north. And the pro<\/em>nunciation is similar to that of the English word “bay”, the third tone, b\u011bi.<\/span>
