Today we’ll learn a very useful ex<\/em>pression of asking directions. \u5728\u54ea\u513f, wher? \u8bf7\u95ee\u6211\u7684\u623f\u95f4\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1fPlease may I ask wher is my room? \u8bf7\u95ee\u738b\u8001\u5e08\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1fPlease may I ask wher is Mr. Wang? All in today’s Chinese Studio.

Yajie: When you get lost or want to know the location of a place, you may ask people for directions. So in Chinese you can say “\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1f” zài\uff0cthe forth tone. Here“\u5728” means “to be here or there, or to be in, on, at ”. We’ve already learned\u5728\u524d\u9762, \u5728\u540e\u9762, right? <\/span>
Cam: Yeah. I still remember\u5728\u524d\u9762\uff0cin front; \u5728\u540e\u9762\uff0cat the back. \u5728\u4e1c\u8fb9\uff0cin the east; \u5728\u897f\u8fb9, in the west.
Yajie: Right. And “\u54ea\u513f” is a question phrase. It means “wher”. You may find it a little bit difficult to pronounce. Actually it is a “n\u01ce” third tone plus an “er”.  The pro<\/em>nunciation of “er” is very similar to that of the English word “sister”. So together it’s “n\u01cer”.

Yajie: We also say\u90a3\u513f, nàr, there.
Cam: nàr.
Yajie: \u8fd9\u513f, “zhèr”, here.
Cam: “zhèr”
Yajie: \u73a9\u513f,“wánr”, to play.
Cam: \u73a9\u513f,“wánr”. Wow that’s funny. I like it.

Yajie: \u6211\u7684, mine. \u7684 suggests that something belo<\/em>ngs to somebody. You can also say \u4f60\u7684\uff0cyours.

Yajie: The answer to\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1fcould be simplified to a place. That’s to say you need not mention the subject of the sentence. For example, if the guest asked a waiter: \u6211\u7684\u623f\u95f4\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1fThe waiter could simply answer: \u5728\u524d\u9762\u3002
Cam: Ok. I see. That’s easy. \u5728\u524d\u9762.
Yajie: To put it politely we always add “\u8bf7\u95ee” before the sentence. “q\u01d0ng” third tone means “please”, and “wèn ” forth tone. The meaning is “to ask”. “\u8bf7\u95ee” means “Please may I ask…?”

Yajie: So we say “\u8bf7\u95ee\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u623f\u95f4\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1f”

Yajie: Besides asking directions we can also use “\u5728\u54ea\u513f” for looking for someone. You can ask “Someone\u5728\u54ea\u513f? ” For example: \u8bf7\u95ee\u738b\u8001\u5e08\u5728\u54ea\u513f\uff1fwher is Mr. Wang? <\/span>

Yajie: \u738bis a surname; and \u8001\u5e08means teacher. Together\u738b\u8001\u5e08means Mr. Wang.
