A recent survey has found children today are not as <\/span>happy<\/span><\/b> as kids who grew up in previous<\/span> <\/span>generation<\/span>s<\/span><\/b>, with society and weighty<\/span> <\/span>expectations<\/span><\/b> from parents the causes of their <\/span><\/font><\/em>ink4″ style=”BORDER-RIGHT: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-TOP: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-LEFT: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-BOTTOM: blue 1px dotted”>\"Words<\/a><\/em>ink3″ style=”BORDER-RIGHT: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-TOP: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-LEFT: blue 1px dotted; BORDER-BOTTOM: blue 1px dotted”><\/em>ink4″>melancholy<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/font><\/span>\"Words<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

A total of 53.2 percent of the 11,754 people who respo<\/em>nded to the survey, which was co<\/em>nducted by the China Youth Daily and published by the newspaper yesterday, agreed children growing up today have it <\/span>tougher<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Just over 11 percent of surveyed adults said they did not have happy <\/span>childhoods<\/span><\/b>, far fewer than children today.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Nearly 58 percent of respo<\/em>ndents said they had children of their own.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Over 78 percent of all those surveyed agreed that society as a whole is <\/span>responsible<\/span><\/b> for the situation.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

a<\/em>bout 51 percent said parents are responsible, while 44.3 percent believed schools are also liable.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"Academic pressure and parents’ <\/span>thirst<\/span> <\/span><\/b>for their children’s success are the two major causes of unhappy childhoods," said Huang Hongji, a child study expert at Shanghai Normal University.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

A total of 71.1 percent said that having little <\/span>spare<\/span><\/b> time due to too much schoolwork and after-school <\/span>tutoring<\/span><\/b> is a main co<\/em>ntributor to the children’s <\/span>depression<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

"Parents’ excessive demands" are also seen as leading factors, according to the poll co<\/em>nducted by the newspaper.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Sun Hongyan, a researcher at the Beijing-ba<\/em>sed China Youth and Children Research Center, said her team surveyed more than 200 primary and seco<\/em>ndary school students in Beijing and East China’s Zhejiang Province, and found that even the children who claimed to be happy are not enjoying true happiness.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

When asked what happiness is, most children answered that "getting good <\/span>grades<\/span><\/b>," "having friends" and "having free time" made them happiest.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Lu Zhi, a children’s literature author, said that parental <\/span>stress<\/span><\/b> could be a reason for their children’s negative emotions.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n

Most people surveyed believe that the lack of a lighthearted childhood may affect children’s <\/span>physical<\/span><\/b> and mental well-being in their future, leading to an <\/span>aversion<\/span><\/b> to learning and hamper their curiosity and independent thinking.<\/span><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n
