\tPeople believe that this term is related to a bridge in neighboring Wu County. When a master was building the bridge the county magistrate passed by. The magistrate didn’t think the bridge was being built correctly and warned that it could collapse later.<\/p>\n

\tThree months later, the magistrate sent one of his aides to check the bridge. When the aide got there, he saw many people leisurely sitting on the bridge. He asked them: “Isn’t this bridge dangerous?” Someone answered: “No. This bridge was built by a master. It has perfectly vertical piers and a flawless arch. It’s called \u7b03\u5b9a(d<\/strong>\u01d4<\/strong>  d<\/strong>ì<\/strong>ng<\/strong>).”<\/p>\n

\tSince then, locals have been using this term to describe people who are in a peaceful state of mind or resting assured. It may also be used to show one’s confidence as “I can \u7b03\u5b9a(d<\/strong>\u01d4<\/strong>  d<\/strong>ì<\/strong>ng<\/strong>) finish my job on time.”<\/p>\n

\tIn order to further underscore one’s confidence, people have added \u6cf0\u5c71(tà<\/strong>i<\/strong>  sh<\/strong>\u0101<\/strong>n<\/strong>), the name of a famous mountain in east China, to this term to create the new phrase “\u7b03\u5b9a\u6cf0\u5c71" (d<\/strong>\u01d4<\/strong>  d<\/strong>ì<\/strong>ng <\/strong>tà<\/strong>i<\/strong>  sh<\/strong>\u0101<\/strong>n<\/strong>) to mean fully confident and 100 percent sure.<\/p>\n

\tAnother variation of this phrase is a reduplication: “\u7b03\u7b03\u5b9a\u5b9a" (d<\/strong>\u01d4<\/strong> <\/strong>d<\/strong>\u01d4<\/strong> d<\/strong>ì<\/strong>ng<\/strong> d<\/strong>ì<\/strong>ng<\/strong>). It may be used to mean someone is doing something in an unhurried manner or with a measured pace.<\/p>\n
