It is only known that he once occupied a position as examining editor (jiantaoguan \u68c0\u8ba8\u5b98), and that he was a relative to the Song period bibliographer Chao Gongwu \u6641\u516c\u6b66 (author of the Junzhai dushu zhi \u90e1\u658b\u8bfb\u4e66\u5fd7). He dedicated his whole life to the study of inkstones.
