A new feature article in the UK’s Financial Times newspaper is putting a spotlight on Chinese language learning in Britain.<\/p>\n

The FT feature is suggesting an increasing(\u589e\u52a0) number of people in the UK are starting to take an interest(\u5174\u8da3) in learning Mandarin, suggesting the momentum is being driven – in part – by financial considerations, as China is one of the UK’s main(\u4e3b\u8981\u7684) trading(\u8d38\u6613) partners(\u4f19\u4f34).<\/p>\n

The UK government hopes to have 400,000 students enrolled in Mandarin courses(\u8bfe\u7a0b) by 2020.<\/p>\n

Chinese missions in the UK have also been working to try to expand(\u6269\u5927) Mandarin education.<\/p>\n

29 Co<\/em>nfucius Institutes(\u5b54\u5b50\u5b66\u9662) and 148 Co<\/em>nfucius Classrooms(\u5b54\u5b50\u8bfe\u5802) have been established in the UK, with 160,000 students registering to learn the language, according to statistics(\u6570\u636e) from the Education Department with the Chinese Embassy in Britain.<\/p>\n

While many(\u8bb8\u591a) British public schools(\u516c\u7acb\u5b66\u6821) have begun offering(\u63d0\u4f9b) Mandarin courses, 45 percent of the UK’s private schools(\u79c1\u7acb\u5b66\u6821) have also established a Mandarin education option.<\/p>\n

Mandarin is also an approved foreign language course in 86 primary schools(\u5c0f\u5b66) and 37 seco<\/em>ndary schools(\u4e2d\u5b66) in Scotland. Students choosing to study Mandarin in Scotland now outnumber(\u591a\u4e8e) those who choose either the local dialect, Gaelic, or Italian as their second language course.<\/p>\n

There are also an increasing number of British students taking the HSK, a natio<\/em>nal standardized exam for testing the Mandarin language level of non-Chinese speakers. 6,237 British students signed up for HSK by July of this year, 5 times the number of that signed up in 2011.<\/p>\n

The British government launched its Mandarin Excellence Programme in September, 2016, with 10 million pounds of funding.<\/p>\n
