S: Dàji\u0101h\u01ceo, w\u01d2shì Stuart. We’ll first finish explaining the sentence we left last lesson. I asked ML what she does on the net, and she answered –<\/p>\n

M: I send emails, visit different websites, and chat quite often. W\u01d2 f\u0101 diànz\u01d0 yóujiàn, f\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn, hái j\u012bngcháng liáoti\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: Diànz\u01d0yóujiàn, e-mail, \u7535\u5b50\u90ae\u4ef6\u3002Diànz\u01d0, DIAN ZI, fourth tone third tone, means electronic. For example, in English we have e-commerce, e-magazine, and their Chinese equivalents are diànz\u01d0 sh\u0101ngwù and diànz\u01d0 zázhì.<\/p>\n

M: Yóujiàn, YOU JIAN, \u90ae\u4ef6\uff0csecond tone fourth tone, mail. And when we send a mail, we use the verb ‘f\u0101’, FA, first tone, \u53d1\u3002\u53d1\u90ae\u4ef6\uff0cf\u0101yóujiàn.<\/p>\n

S: F\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn. \u8bbf\u95ee\uff0cFANG WEN, third tone fourth tone, f\u01cengwèn, to visit. Bùtóngde, different, \u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u3002Tóng, TONG, second tone, tóng, means yíyàng, the same.<\/p>\n

M: And w\u01cengzhàn, WANG ZHAN, third tone fourth tone, \u7f51\u7ad9, means website. Remember the g\u014dnggòng qìch\u0113zhàn we’ve learned? Duìle, it’s bus station, \u516c\u5171\u6c7d\u8f66\u7ad9\u3002The zhàn is the same zhàn as in w\u01cengzhàn, web-station, website.<\/p>\n

S: And the w\u01ceng of course means web, net.<\/p>\n

M: So f\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn, to visit different websites, \u8bbf\u95ee\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u7f51\u7ad9\u3002<\/p>\n

S: Hái j\u012bngcháng liáoti\u0101n. J\u012bngcháng, JING CHANG, first tone second tone, \u7ecf\u5e38\uff0coften, frequently. Liáoti\u0101n, LIAO TIAN, \u804a\u5929\uff0csecond tone first tone, to chat. It can both mean chatting through the net, or face to face.<\/p>\n

M: Now let’s read the whole sentence again, W\u01d2 f\u0101 diànz\u01d0 yóujiàn, f\u01cengwèn bùtóngde w\u01cengzhàn, hái j\u012bngcháng liáoti\u0101n. \u6211\u53d1\u7535\u5b50\u90ae\u4ef6\uff0c\u8bbf\u95ee\u4e0d\u540c\u7684\u7f51\u7ad9\uff0c\u8fd8\u7ecf\u5e38\u804a\u5929\u3002<\/p>\n

S: Wow, ML, in the past two lessons we really learnt a lot of new words.<\/p>\n

M: That’s true! But we still have one more thing to tell our listeners. Then we’ll finish our lesson by repeating most of the text we learnt today.<\/p>\n

S: No objection! W\u01d2bù f\u01cenduì. \u6211\u4e0d\u53cd\u5bf9\u3002Literally, I don’t object.<\/p>\n

M: What’s the Chinese word for computer? Duìle, diànn\u01ceo, the ‘electric brain’, \u7535\u8111. There is another Chinese name for computer, which is ‘jìsuànj\u012b’, a computing machine, \u8ba1\u7b97\u673a\u3002<\/p>\n

S: Remember the measure word for jìsuànj\u012b or diànn\u01ceo? Duìle, it’s tái. We use this measure word for big electric home appliances or machines. So, a computer, we can either say \u4e00\u53f0\u7535\u8111 or \u4e00\u53f0\u8ba1\u7b97\u673a\uff0cthe same, yíyàng, yíyàng.<\/p>\n

M: Ok, now let’s read the text again, at full speed. Try to follow us, and speak as loudly as you can. Y\u012bèrs\u0101n, k\u0101ish\u01d0!<\/p>\n

S: Zhèj\u01d0ti\u0101n, ML míshàngle shàngw\u01ceng. \u8fd9\u51e0\u5929\uff0c\u66fc\u4e3d\u8ff7\u4e0a\u4e86\u4e0a\u7f51\u3002<\/p>\n
