M. Can you guess the meaning of b\u01d0? Listen when I say ‘I’m better than him’ \u6211\u6bd4\u4ed6\u597d wò b\u01d0 t\u0101 h\u01ceo.<\/p>\n

S: Duì le! B\u01d0 here means ‘compared with’. So how do you say ‘I’m faster than him?<\/p>\n

S:  And if \u9ad8GAO gao1 means ‘tall’, how do you say ‘You’re taller than him?’<\/p>\n

S:   Now say ‘I’m taller than you’.<\/p>\n

S: Guessed? Right, \u77ee\u01cei \u01cei, third tone, means ‘short’.<\/p>\n

S: So we’ve learnt ‘tall’ gao1, and ‘short’ \u01cei. One small thing: n\u01d0, b\u01d0, w\u01d2 and \u01cei are all third tone words. But, as we’ve said before, pro<\/em>nouncing a third tone word followed directly by another third tone word is a bit awkward. So the first word is usually pro<\/em>nounced in the second tone. For example, it’s much easier to say ní h\u01ceo than n\u01d0 h\u01ceo. What do you do when you get three or four third tone words in a row? Well, it can get quite complicated if you think a<\/em>bout it.<\/p>\n

M: So don’t think a<\/em>bout it. Just mimic us and say what comes naturally, and you’ll usually be right.<\/p>\n

S: For example, ‘I’m very short’ is I \u6211 very \u5f88 short \u77ee. ManLi will now tell us she is very short, and you guys at home say the same thing, (even if you are seven feet tall). Ready.<\/p>\n

M: \u6211\u5f88\u77ee w\u01d2 h\u011bn \u01cei.<\/p>\n

S:  And now, ‘I’m shorter than you’.<\/p>\n

M: \u6211\u6bd4\u4f60\u77ee w\u01d2 b\u01d0 n\u01d0 \u01cei.<\/p>\n

S:  Now, ‘he is shorter than me.’<\/p>\n

M: \u4ed6\u6bd4\u6211\u77ee t\u0101 b\u01d0 w\u01d2 \u01cei.<\/p>\n

S:  And I will say, ‘I’m better than you’. \u6211\u6bd4\u4f60\u597d w\u01d2 b\u01d0 n\u01d0 h\u01ceo.<\/p>\n

S: Now, to add to our ways of describing people, we’ll finish by learning ‘fat’ and ‘thin’, and practice using \u6bd4 BI b\u01d0. Listen out for the word for ‘fat’.<\/p>\n

M: Stuart, you’re fatter than me. \u4f60\u6bd4\u6211\u80d6n\u01d0 b\u01d0 w\u01d2 pàng.<\/p>\n
