M: Qù kàn diàny\u01d0ng? What time does the movie start? \u7535\u5f71\u51e0\u70b9\u5f00\u59cb? Diàny\u01d0ng jí di\u01cen k\u0101ish\u01d0?<\/p>\n

Diàn means ‘electric’, as in \u7535\u8bdd\uff0ctelephone. Y\u01d0ng means ‘shadow’. What is an ‘electric shadow’? Duìle. A ‘movie’, a ‘film’. Diàny\u01d0ng. <\/p>\n

S: Everybody say, ‘I’m going to see a movie the day after tomorrow’.<\/p>\n

M: Duì le! \u6211\u540e\u5929\u53bb\u770b\u7535\u5f71 w\u01d2 hòuti\u0101n qù kàn diàny\u01d0ng.<\/p>\n

S: Are you going? N\u01d0 qù bú qù, n\u01d0 qù bú qù?<\/p>\n

M: What time does it start? \u51e0\u70b9\u5f00\u59cb jí di\u01cen k\u0101ish\u01d0?<\/p>\n

S: You can also say, \u4e03\u70b9\u5dee\u4e94\u5206q\u012b di\u01cen chà w\u01d4 f\u0113n. chà CHA chà, means ‘short of’, or ‘lacking’.<\/p>\n

M: So, literally, ‘7 o’clock lacking 5 minutes’ 5 to 7’: \u4e03\u70b9\u5dee\u4e94\u5206q\u012b di\u01cen chà w\u01d4 f\u0113n.<\/p>\n

S: So, try to say, ‘5 to 5’.<\/p>\n

M: Duìle. \u4e94\u70b9\u5dee\u4e94\u5206 w\u01d4 di\u01cen chà w\u01d4 f\u0113n.<\/p>\n

S: Now say, ‘5 to 6’.<\/p>\n

S: One more. 10 to 10.<\/p>\n
