Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing opera. Kunqu opera(\u6606\u66f2) was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with the this style. Various local opera were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Beijing opera gradually became the most influential style of opera in China and was named the &quot;natio<em><\/em>nal treasure&quot;(\u56fd\u7cb9) of China. It is popular among not o<em><\/em>nly the Chinese but also many foreigners.<br \/>  &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 20px; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\">Beijing opera has four roles:<strong><span>&nbsp;<\/span>sheng(\u751f), dan(\u65e6), jing(\u51c0) and chou(\u4e11).<\/strong><span>&nbsp;<\/span>Sheng is the main male role. Dan refers to any female role. Jing is the painted-face male role with distinctive temperament, character or appearance. Chou is a male clown role with a small patch of white chalk around the nose.
