The  World Bank  recently  named Justin Lin Yifu \u6797\u6bc5\u592b lín yìf\u016b, who defected from Taiwan and rose to become a top eco<\/em>nomic strategist for China, as its chief eco<\/em>nomist — the first time a Chinese has held the job.<\/p>\n

– \u6797 lín is his family name. You may notice form the formation of the character that two \u6728 (tree, wood) make a  \u6797 (forest)  \u72ec\u6728\u4e0d\u6210\u6797 Dumu bu cheng lin. There is a similar  English proverb “One tree does not make a forest”. See? This chinese character reflects quite vividly the meaning of the famous proverb.<\/p>\n

– \u6bc5 yì, perservance. Chinese parents embody their wish in the future for the children that perseverance leads to a great success.<\/p>\n

– \u592b f\u016b, man. Chinese philosophy (\u7537\u5b50\u6c49,\u5927\u4e08\u592b!Nanzihan – da zhangfu!) indicates that a true man should have great ambition.

World Bank President Robert Zoellick said Lin, the founding director of the China Center for Eco<\/em>nomic Research (CCER) at Peking University, would bring to the bank the perspective of a developing country on agriculture issues, as well as on eco<\/em>nomic challenges in Africa, wher China has aggressively sought trade and investment opportunities.<\/p>\n

“As our first chief eco<\/em>nomist from a developing country, and an expert on eco<\/em>nomic development and particularly agriculture, Justin Lin brings a unique set of skills and experience to the World Bank Group,” Zoellick said in a statement announcing the appointment.<\/p>\n

“I look forward to working closely with him on a number of areas, including growth and investment in Africa, opportunities for South-South learning (between developing countries) and bank instruments to better support countries hit by high energy and agriculture prices,” he said.<\/p>\n

“China’s experiences can help the World Bank shore up its leading role in global poverty reduction,” Lin told Chinese news agency Xinhua after the announcement was made.<\/p>\n

Lin, 55, is expected to take his positions as the global development lender’s senior vice president for development eco<\/em>nomics and chief eco<\/em>nomist on May 31. He replaces Francois Bourguignon, who retired as the World Bank’s chief eco<\/em>nomist last year.<\/p>\n

Lin, who graduated from Taiwan’s Natio<\/em>nal Chengchi University, earned his MA at Peking University in 1982 and then a doctorate in eco<\/em>nomics from the co<\/em>nservative University of Chicago in 1986.<\/p>\n

He has had a key role in China’s eco<\/em>nomic modernization.<\/p>\n

The eco<\/em>nomist has done extensive research into fiscal decentralization, reform of state businesses, rice farm eco<\/em>nomics and general farm sector reform and modernization, according to his CCER biography.<\/p>\n

Born in Taiwan in 1952, Lin took an eco<\/em>nomics degree at Natio<\/em>nal Chengchi University and was then sent to Jinmen (Kinmen) island just off the Chinese mainland during his military service.
