Ang Lee, his Chinese name is \u674e\u5b89(L\u01d0 \u0100n). He was born October 23, 1954, in Taiwan. He is not o<\/em>nly a Asian descent film director, but also screenwriter and producer. Lee has directed a diverse set of films such as Sense and Sensibility (1995), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Hulk (2003). He has won the Academy Award for Best Director twice, first for Brokeback Mountain (2005) and most recently for Life of Pi (2012). He is the first person of Asian descent to win the Oscar twice for Best Director. The Other Side of the Screen, Whitney Crothers Dilley has analyzed in detail the striking diversity of Lee’s films, as well as Lee’s recurring themes of alienation, marginalization, and repression.<\/div>\n

In the early stage, Many of Lee’s films, particularly his early Chinese trilogy, have also focused on the interactions between modernity and tradition. Thus the famous "Father Knows Best" trilogy came out.Pushing Hands(1992), The Wedding Banquet (1993) and Eat Drink Man Woman (1994), it forms his "Father Knows Best" trilogy, each of which deals with co<\/em>nflicts between an older and more traditio<\/em>nal generation and their children as they co<\/em>nfront a world of change.<\/div>\n

Pushing Hands (1992) was a success in Taiwan both among critics and at the box office. It received eight nominations in the Golden Horse Film Festival, Taiwan’s premier film festival.<\/div>\n

Inspired by the success, Li-Kong Hsu collaborated with Lee in their second film, The Wedding Banquet (1993), which won the Golden Bear at the 43rd Berlin Internatio<\/em>nal Film Festival and was nominated as the Best Foreign Language Film in both the Golden Globe and the Academy Awards. In all, this film collected eleven Taiwanese and internatio<\/em>nal awards and made Lee a rising star. These first two movies were ba<\/em>sed on stories of Chinese Americans, and both were filmed in the US.<\/div>\n

In 1995, Hsu invited Lee to return to Taiwan to make Eat Drink Man Woman, a film that depicts traditio<\/em>nal values, modern relationships, and family co<\/em>nflicts in Taipei. The film was a box office hit and was critically acclaimed. For a second co<\/em>nsecutive year, Lee’s film received the Best Foreign Language Film nomination in both the Golden Globe and Academy Awards, as well as in the British Academy Award. Eat Drink Man Woman won five awards in Taiwan and internationally, including the Best Director from Independent Spirit.<\/div>\n

The three films show the Co<\/em>nfucian family at risk and star the Taiwanese actor Sihung Lung to form what has been called Lee’s "Father Knows Best" trilogy.<\/div>\n

Until now Lee has made 13 films in a diverse career. It was Sense and Sensibility\uff08\u7406\u667a\u4e0e\u60c5\u611f\uff09 (1995) that brought Lee his first true internatio<\/em>nal acclaim. Following that, both Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon \uff08\u5367\u864e\u85cf\u9f99\uff09(2000) (nominated for Academy Award for Best Director) and Brokeback Mountain \uff08\u65ad\u81c2\u5c71\uff09(2005) (which won the Academy Award for Best Director) became cultural touchstones, sweeping awards ceremo<\/em>nies and, in the case of Brokeback Mountain, sparking intense critical debates. When asked by a TV interviewer how he found his films, Lee is said to have replied: "I don’t find my films, my films find me."Ang Lee won his second Oscar for Best Director in Feb 2012 for “Life of Pi.” Lee has been involved in the process of filmmaking in various capacities, though the highlight of his career and legacy is his directorial work.<\/div>\n
