His original name was Yunsun and his courtesy name was Tianxiang. After he won the title of Go<em><\/em>ngshi (local examination, lower than imperial examination, Jinshi), he changed his name to Tianxiang and his courtesy name to Lvshan. In 1256, he became Zhuangyuan (the top candidate of imperial examination) and o<em><\/em>nce again changed his courtesy name, this time to Songrui. After that, as he o<em><\/em>nce lived in Wenshan, he finally took the pseudo<em><\/em>nym of Wenshan in addition to the other pseudo<em><\/em>nym Fuxiu Daoren. Wen Tianxiang was well-known among the later generations for his loyalty and tenacity. When he was captured, he was persuaded to surrender by Emperor Shizu of the Yuan Dynasty with the benefits of high official titles and high pay, but Wen Tianxiang would rather die than surrender, which won him the approval of later generations.
