M: Peng2you3men. Ni3men hao3! Huan1ying2 shou1ting1 Xian4zai4 Xue2 Han4yu3. Wo3 shi4 ML.<\/p>\n

S: Da4 jia1 hao3. Wo3 shi4 Stuart. Well, we’ve learnt the some relations: son – er2zi, daughter – nv3er2, big brother – ge1ge, little brother – di4di, big sister – jie3jie, little sister – mei4mei, husband – zhang4fu, wife – qi1zi, and sweetheart – ai4ren2.<\/p>\n

M: As we said, there’s a special term for almost every relation in Chinese. Best to use your dictio<\/em>nary and learn them as required.<\/p>\n

S: Too many of them! I usually get around the problem by saying something like, my elder sister’s son, or my mum’s younger brother, or whatever.<\/p>\n

M: That’s what we’ll do now, and learn things like junior school, high school, and some academic subjects.<\/p>\n

S: Not maths, I hope!<\/p>\n

S: Today, ML is Mrs. Ma, Ma3 nv3shi4. She has some photos to show me.<\/p>\n

M: Look! \u770b\uff0c\u8fd9\u662f\u6211\u59d0\u59d0\u7684\u513f\u5b50.\u3000\u4ed6\u516b\u5c81 zhe3 shi4 wo3 jie3jie de er2zi. Ta1 ba1 sui4. He goes to primary school, grade 3\u3000\u4ed6\u4e0a\u5c0f\u5b66\u4e09\u5e74\u7ea7 ta1 shang4 xiao3xue2 san1 nian2ji2.<\/p>\n

S: Who is this? \u8fd9\u662f\u8c01 zhe4 shi4 shei2?<\/p>\n

M: \u5979\u662f\u6211\u54e5\u54e5\u7684\u5973\u513f ta1 shi4 wo3 ge1ge de nv3er2.<\/p>\n

S: Does she go to middle school? \u5979\u4e0a\u4e2d\u5b66\u4e86\u5417\uff1fta1 shang4 zhong1xue2 ma?<\/p>\n

M: Shi4 de. Grade two \u4e8c\u5e74\u7ea7 er2 nian2ji2.<\/p>\n

S: She’s very pretty \u5979\u5f88\u6f02\u4eae ta1 hen3 piao4liang4. Ah, who’s this? \u8fd9\u662f\u8c01 zhe4 shi4 shei2?<\/p>\n

M: \u6211\u4e08\u592b\u7684\u5f1f\u5f1f wo3 zhang4fu de di4di. He goes to university \u4ed6\u4e0a\u5927\u5b66\u4e86\u3002Ta1 shang4 da4 xue2le.<\/p>\n

S: What does he study? \u4ed6\u5b66\u4ec0\u4e48? ta1 xue2 shen2me?<\/p>\n

M: Zoology \u4ed6\u5b66\u52a8\u7269\u5b66 ta1 xue2 dong4wu4 xue2.<\/p>\n

S: Is he very clever \u4ed6\u5f88\u806a\u660e\u5417 ta1 hen3 cong1ming ma?<\/p>\n

M: Much cleverer than you \u6bd4\u4f60\u806a\u660e\u5f97\u591a bi3 ni3 cong1ming de duo1!<\/p>\n

S: Now for the new stuff. ML said –<\/p>\n

M: \u4ed6\u4e0a\u5c0f\u5b66\u4e09\u5e74\u7ea7\u3002 \u5c0f\u5b66 literally\uff0clittle learn, and it’s the same xue2 as in school, xue2xiao4. xiao3xue2 is, of course, primary school, xiao3xue2. And for the ‘go’ in ‘go to school’,
we use shang4.<\/p>\n

S: \u4e09\u5e74\u7ea7, \u5e74\u7ea7 NIAN JI nian2ji2, ‘grade’ or ‘form’. xiao3xue2 san1 nian2ji2, primary school, grade 3. So everybody say, he goes to primary school, grade four. Hen3 hao3. \u4ed6\u4e0a\u5c0f\u5b66\u56db\u5e74\u7ea7 ta1 shang4 xiao3xue2 si4 nian2ji2.<\/p>\n

M: xiao3xue, easy. And so are middle school and university. \u4e2d\u5b66 zhong1xue2, and ‘big xue2′ \u5927\u5b66 da4xue2.<\/p>\n

S: So everybody say, My son goes to middle school, my daughter is at university.<\/p>\n

M: Fei1chang2 hao3. \u6211\u513f\u5b50\u4e0a\u4e2d\u5b66\uff0c\u6211\u5973\u513f\u4e0a\u5927\u5b66 wo3 er2zi shang4 zhong1xue2, wo3 nv3er2 shang4 da4xue2.<\/p>\n

M: And before we finish. What is a dong4wu? Dui3le. Animal.<\/p>\n

S: And \u52a8\u7269\u5b66 is ‘animal study’, zoology. Just put a xue2 on the end, and we have the academic subject.<\/p>\n

M: Now, if \u6570 means ‘number’, what is \u6570\u5b66shu4xue2?<\/p>\n
