\u667a ‘intelligence’ and \u4eba\u7c7b\u547d\u8fd0\u5171\u540c\u4f53 ‘a shared destiny for mankind’ have been chosen as Internatio<\/em>nal Chinese Character(\u6c49\u5b57) of the Year and Internatio<\/em>nal Chinese Wor(\u8bcd) of the Year, in a competition organized by China’s Ministry of Education and the Commercial Press. <\/p>\n

The month-long competition, which ended on Wednesday, saw two characters and two words chosen by experts(\u4e13\u5bb6) and netizens(\u7f51\u6c11) to showcase the charm of the Chinese language. <\/p>\n

Since 2006, this annual competition has been a recor(\u8bb0\u5f55) of changes(\u53d8\u5316) to both the Chinese language(\u8bed\u8a00) and Chinese society(\u793e\u4f1a).<\/p>\n

Yu Dianli, general manager of the Commercial Press, said that Artificial Intelligence (AI,\u4eba\u5de5\u667a\u80fd) emerged as a key topic(\u70ed\u95e8\u8bdd\u9898) in 2017, which is why ‘intelligence’ was chosen as the Internatio<\/em>nal Chinese Character of the Year.<\/p>\n

Yu said that the choice of ‘a shared destiny for mankind’ (\u4eba\u7c7b\u547d\u8fd0\u5171\u540c\u4f53) as the Internatio<\/em>nal Chinese Word of the Year was driven by the growing awareness of the Chinese people of their fundamental role(\u89d2\u8272) in the internatio<\/em>nal community. Chinese President Xi Jinping mentio<\/em>ned(\u63d0\u5230) the word in his keynote speech(\u6f14\u8bb2) at the United Nations at Geneva on January 18, 2017. The word was also mentio<\/em>ned in Xi’s speech at the 19th session of Natio<\/em>nal Co<\/em>ngress of the Communist Party of China in October 2017.<\/p>\n

Alo<\/em>ngside the Internatio<\/em>nal Character and Internatio<\/em>nal Word of the year, \u4eab ‘share’ was seleced as the Natio<\/em>nal Character of the Year, and \u521d\u5fc3 ‘original aspiration’ was picked as the Natio<\/em>nal Word of the Year.<\/p>\n

Yu Dianli said that the character \u4eab ‘share’ is a reflection(\u53cd\u6620) on the spirit(\u7cbe\u795e) of the Chinese people. \u521d\u5fc3 ‘original aspiration’ means being true to one’s aspirations while at the same time being open to new ideas. The word highlights the intellectual energy of the Chinese people and their determination(\u51b3\u5fc3) and co<\/em>nfidence(\u81ea\u4fe1) to follow the path led by the Communist Party.<\/p>\n

During the competition, citizens from around China shared their own understandings of the chosen characters and words. When asked a<\/em>bout what \u521d\u5fc3 ‘original aspiration’ means to her, Beijing citizen Lu Yan said, "Although our dreams of the future may change as we grow, we should always remember our heartfelt aspirations."<\/p>\n
