S: Learning that tomorrow is ML’s ‘sh\u0113ngrì’, I said, ‘sh\u0113ngrì kuàilè!’ Happy birthday! Sh\u0113ngrì kuàilè. I bet you’ve guessed what ‘kuàilè’ means here…Duìle, happy, kuàilè, KUAI LE, both fourth tone, kuàilè.<\/p>\n

M: So, if new is ‘x\u012bn’ and year is ‘nián’, new year is ‘x\u012bnnián’, how do we say ‘happy new year’ in Chinese?<\/p>\n

S: Did you say ‘x\u012bnnián kuàilè’, ‘x\u012bnnián kuàilè’? You did\uff1fCongratulations! \u606d\u559c\u606d\u559c\uff0c you’ve won a break.<\/p>\n

M: I told Stuart, \u6211\u7684\u5bb6\u4eba\u5bc4\u6765\u4e86\u6f02\u4eae\u7684\u5361\u7247\u3002My family sent me beautiful cards. \u6211\u7684\u5bb6\u4eba\u5bc4\u6765\u4e86\u6f02\u4eae\u7684\u5361\u7247\u3002<\/p>\n

S: Jì, send by post or email, jì. Out of interest, if you are the receiver, you usually use ‘jìlái’, as in this sentence. Remember, \u6765means to come. But if you are the one to send things out, you often use ‘jìqù’ or ‘jìz\u01d2u’. The ‘qù’ and ‘z\u01d2u’ both mean ‘to go’.<\/p>\n

M: Ji\u0101rén, family, family members, ji\u0101rén. Piàoliang, PIAO LIANG, beautiful or pretty, piàoliang. And ‘\u5361\u7247’, KA PIAN, third tone fourth tone, k\u01cepiàn, is card.<\/p>\n

S: So, t\u0101de ji\u0101rén jìláile piàoliangde k\u01cepiàn. o<\/em>nce again. T\u0101de ji\u0101rén jìláile piàoliangde k\u01cepiàn.<\/p>\n

M: What’s more, my friends told me, \u800c\u4e14\u6211\u7684\u670b\u53cb\u4eec\u8bf4\uff0cthey would hold a birthday party for me tomorrow evening! \u4ed6\u4eec\u660e\u5929\u665a\u4e0a\u8981\u4e3a\u6211\u4e3e\u884c\u751f\u65e5\u5bb4\u4f1a\uff01<\/p>\n

S: Wèi, WEI, fourth tone, means ‘for’. Wèi w\u01d2, for me. In English we say, ‘do sth. for sb.’, but in Chinese people always say ‘for sb. do sth.’. Wèiw\u01d2 j\u01d4xíng sh\u0113ngrì yànhuì.<\/p>\n

M: Still remember the word ‘j\u01d4xíng’, \u4e3e\u884c? Right, it means to hold a meeting, party, or whatever. And ‘party’ in Chinese is ‘yànhuì’, YAN HUI, both fourth tone, yànhuì. So ‘birthday party’ is ‘sh\u0113ngrì yànhuì’, ‘sh\u0113ngrì yànhuì’.<\/p>\n

S: And ML kindly invited me to her birthday party. Hmm, I’ll try my best, though I’m really busy these days. But now I’m to get off work – xiàb\u0101n, and find a gift for her. See you tomorrow!
