M: Well, it’s always useful to be able to tell people wher things are, so let’s do more position words.<\/p>\n

S: H\u01ceo zhúyi. We have jumped from the Summer Palace – Yíhéyuán to Tiananmen Square. Now for a quick geography lesson. But first, say with ML, North, north side, South, south side, East, east side, and West, west side. Ready? Begin! \u51c6\u5907\uff0c\u5f00\u59cb! zh\u01d4nbèi, k\u0101ish\u01d0.<\/p>\n

S: Ok, let’s look at the new things. The bi\u0101n in nánbi\u0101n or b\u011bibi\u0101n is the same bi\u0101n as in pángbi\u0101n and other position words we’ve learnt. It means ‘side’.<\/p>\n

M: So, now say with me, On the north side, \u5728\u5317\u8fb9 zài b\u011bibi\u0101n, on the south side\u5728\u5357\u8fb9zài nánbi\u0101n, on the east side\u5728\u4e1c\u8fb9zài d\u014dngbi\u0101n, and what is ‘on the west side? H\u011bn h\u01ceo. \u5728\u897f\u8fb9zài x\u012bbi\u0101n.<\/p>\n

S: And I said, \u5728\u5317\u4eac\u7684\u4ec0\u4e48\u5730\u65b9\uff1fshénme dìfang? \u5730\u65b9DI FANG dìfang, remember, means ‘place’. What place, \u4ec0\u4e48\u5730\u65b9shénme dìfang?<\/p>\n

M: Tiananmen is in the heart of Beijing. \u5929\u5b89\u95e8\u5728\u5317\u4eac\u7684\u4e2d\u5fc3zh\u014dngx\u012bn, literally, ‘middle heart’, and it means ‘center’ or ‘heart of’. Now say, In the heart of Beijing, \u5728\u5317\u4eac\u7684\u4e2d\u5fc3zài B\u011bij\u012bng de zh\u014dngx\u012bn.<\/p>\n

S: We also heard the names of some famous buildings around Tiananmen.<\/p>\n

M: Like\u524d\u95e8, literally ‘front gate’ and one of the large gates remaining from the old city wall.<\/p>\n
