M: \u8bf7\u95ee q\u01d0ngwèn. Q\u01d0ng QING q\u01d0ng, ‘please’. \u95ee WEN wèn, means to ‘ask’. So q\u01d0ngwèn, means, ‘please may I ask’. So, all together, \u8bf7\u95ee\uff0c\u73b0\u5728\u662f\u51e0\u70b9\u949f\uff1fq\u01d0ngwèn, xiànzài shì jí di\u01cen zh\u014dng?
S: 8:30. Xiànzài shì b\u0101 di\u01cen bàn, b\u0101 di\u01cen bàn.
M: Morning or afternoon? \u4e0a\u5348\u8fd8\u662f\u4e0b\u5348? shàngw\u01d4 háishì xiàw\u01d4.
S: Morning. shàngw\u01d4, shàngw\u01d4. We’ve learnt \u65e9\u6668 z\u01ceochén, which means ‘early morning’. The morning in general is shàngw\u01d4.
M: Shàngw\u01d4. Shàng SHANG literally means ‘on’ shàng. \u4e0b XIA means ‘under’, xià. And \u5348 WU w\u01d4, is ‘midday, noon’.
S: So if shangwu is ‘morning’, what is xiàw\u01d4? Duìle. ‘afternoon’, xiàw\u01d4.
M: For midday, we say \u4e2d\u5348 zh\u014dngw\u01d4. The zh\u014dng means middle, as in Zh\u014dngguó.
S: And the evening is, \u665a\u4e0a w\u01censhàng.
M: So, let’s quickly say early morning, morning, noon, afternoon and evening.
S: z\u01ceochén, z\u01ceochén.
M: shàngw\u01d4, shàngw\u01d4.
S: xiàw\u01d4, xiàw\u01d4.
M: zh\u014dngw\u01d4, zh\u014dngw\u01d4,
S: w\u01censhàng, w\u01censhàng.
M: Hén h\u01ceo. And these make it really easy for us to learn to say ‘breakfast’ ‘lunch’ and ‘dinner’.

S: W\u01d4c\u0101n WU CAN w\u01d4c\u0101n. The can is the same can as in Chinese food, zh\u014dngc\u0101n, or restaurant, c\u0101ngu\u01cen. So, w\u01d4c\u0101n, ‘midday food’, ‘lunch’ w\u01d4c\u0101n.
M: And \u665a\u996d WAN FAN w\u01cenfàn. W\u01cen here means evening, w\u01cenfàn, evening food, meaning, of course, ‘dinner’.
