The selecion and order of the 12 Chinese Zodiac animal signs were determined according to animals’ time of activity.
\u5341\u4e8c\u751f\u8096\u9996\u5148\u51fa\u73b0\u4e8e\u8ba1\u65f6\u3002\u73b0\u5728\u6211\u4eec\u5c06\u4e00\u663c\u591c\u7528\u4e8c\u5341\u56db\u5c0f\u65f6\u8ba1\u65f6\uff0c\u53e4\u4ee3\u5929\u6587\u5b66\u5bb6\u5c06\u663c\u591c\u5206\u4e3a\u5341\u4e8c\u65f6\u8fb0\uff0c\u5373\uff1a\u5b50\u3001\u4e11\u3001\u5bc5\u3001\u536f\u3001\u8fb0\u3001\u5df3\u3001\u5348\u3001\u672a\u3001\u7533\u3001\u9149\u3001\u620c\u3001\u4ea5\u3002\u540c\u65f6\u4ed6\u4eec\u5728\u89c2\u5929\u8c61\u65f6\uff0c\u4f9d\u7167\u5341\u4e8c\u79cd\u52a8\u7269\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u4e60\u60ef\u548c\u6d3b\u52a8\u7684\u65f6\u8fb0\uff0c\u786e\u5b9a\u4e86\u4e0e\u65f6\u8fb0\u76f8\u5bf9\u5e94\u7684\u5341\u4e8c\u751f\u8096\u3002
The Chinese Zodiac initially originated from the division of time. Nowadays, we divide a day and night into 24 hours, however, ancient astro<\/em>nomers divided it into 12 shichen which is a two-hour period, namely, zi, chou, yin, mao, chen, si, wu, wei, shen, you, xu and hai. In astro<\/em>nomical observations, they chose 12 animal signs correspo<\/em>nding to each shichen according to animals’ living habits and their time of activity.
\u591c\u95f4\u5341\u4e00\u70b9\u81f3\u6b21\u65e5\u51cc\u6668\u4e00\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u5b50\u65f6\uff0c\u6b63\u662f\u8001\u9f20\u8d81\u591c\u6df1\u4eba\u9759\uff0c\u9891\u7e41\u6d3b\u52a8\u4e4b\u65f6\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u5b50\u9f20”\u3002
From 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. of the next day, it is zi. It is the time for rats to run around while people fall asleep, so we have the zi rat.
\u51cc\u6668\u4e00\u70b9\u81f3\u4e09\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u4e11\u65f6\u3002\u725b\u4e60\u60ef\u591c\u95f4\u5403\u8349\uff0c\u519c\u5bb6\u5e38\u5728\u6df1\u591c\u8d77\u6765\u6311\u706f\u5582\u725b\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u4e11\u725b”\u3002
From 1 a.m. to 3 a.m., it is chou. Oxen are used to eating grass at night, and farmers often get up late at night and feed them, so we have chou ox.
\u51cc\u6668\u4e09\u70b9\u81f3\u4e94\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u5bc5\u65f6\u3002\u6b64\u65f6\u663c\u4f0f\u591c\u884c\u7684\u8001\u864e\u6700\u51f6\u731b\uff0c\u53e4\u4eba\u5e38\u4f1a\u5728\u6b64\u65f6\u542c\u5230\u864e\u5578\u58f0\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u5bc5\u864e”\u3002
From 3 a.m. to 5 a.m., it is yin. Because the tiger often moves a<\/em>bout at night and ancient people often heard them roaring at this time, we call it yin tiger.
\u6e05\u6668\u4e94\u70b9\u81f3\u4e03\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u536f\u65f6\u3002\u5929\u521a\u4eae\uff0c\u5154\u5b50\u51fa\u7a9d\uff0c\u559c\u6b22\u5403\u5e26\u6709\u6668\u9732\u7684\u9752\u8349\uff0c\u6545\u4e3a“\u536f\u5154”\u3002
From 5 a.m. to 7 a.m., it is mao. Hares go out and eat green grass with morning dew during this period of time, so we call it mao hare.
\u65e9\u6668\u4e03\u70b9\u81f3\u4e5d\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u8fb0\u65f6\u3002\u6b64\u65f6\u4e00\u822c\u5bb9\u6613\u8d77\u96fe\uff0c\u4f20\u8bf4\u9f99\u559c\u817e\u4e91\u9a7e\u96fe\uff0c\u53c8\u503c\u65ed\u65e5\u4e1c\u5347\uff0c\u84b8\u84b8\u65e5\u4e0a\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u8fb0\u9f99”\u3002
From 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., it is chen. It often mists at this time and legend says that dragons like to ride on clouds and mist. It’s also the time for the sun to rise, so we have chen dragon.
\u4e0a\u5348\u4e5d\u70b9\u81f3\u5341\u4e00\u65f6\uff0c\u5c5e\u5df3\u65f6\u3002\u5927\u96fe\u6563\u53bb\uff0c\u8273\u9633\u9ad8\u7167\uff0c\u86c7\u7c7b\u51fa\u6d1e\u89c5\u98df\uff0c\u6545\u4f5c“\u5df3\u86c7”\u3002
From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., it is si. The mist has vanished and the sun has risen up in the sky. Snakes go out to find food, so we call it si snake.
\u4e2d\u5348\u5341\u4e00\u70b9\u81f3\u4e00\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u5348\u65f6\u3002\u53e4\u65f6\u91ce\u9a6c\u672a\u88ab\u4eba\u7c7b\u9a6f\u670d\uff0c\u6bcf\u5f53\u5348\u65f6\uff0c\u56db\u5904\u5954\u8dd1\u5636\u9e23\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u5348\u9a6c”\u3002
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., it is wu. Before wild horses were domesticated in the ancient time, they usually ran around and neighed at this time. That’s why we call it wu horse.
\u5348\u540e\u4e00\u70b9\u81f3\u4e09\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u672a\u65f6\u3002\u6709\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u7ba1\u6b64\u65f6\u4e3a“\u7f8a\u51fa\u5761”\uff0c\u610f\u601d\u662f\u653e\u7f8a\u7684\u597d\u65f6\u5019\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u672a\u7f8a”\u3002
From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., it is wei. In some places, people call this period “sheep on the slope” because it’s good time for herding sheep. That’s why we call it wei sheep.
\u4e0b\u5348\u4e09\u70b9\u81f3\u4e94\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u7533\u65f6\u3002\u592a\u9633\u504f\u897f\u4e86\uff0c\u7334\u5b50\u559c\u5728\u6b64\u65f6\u557c\u53eb\uff0c\u6545\u4e3a“\u7533\u7334”\u3002
From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., it is shen. The sun has moved to the western half of the sky. Mo<\/em>nkeys love to screech at this time, so we call it shen monkey.
\u4e0b\u5348\u4e94\u70b9\u81f3\u4e03\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u9149\u65f6\u3002\u592a\u9633\u843d\u5c71\u4e86\uff0c\u9e21\u5728\u7a9d\u524d\u6253\u8f6c\uff0c\u6545\u79f0“\u9149\u9e21”\u3002
From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., it is you. The sun has set. Roosters went back to their nest, so we call it you rooster.
\u508d\u665a\u4e03\u70b9\u81f3\u4e5d\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u620c\u65f6\u3002\u4eba\u52b3\u788c\u4e00\u5929\uff0c\u95e9\u95e8\u51c6\u5907\u4f11\u606f\u4e86\u3002\u72d7\u5367\u95e8\u524d\u5b88\u62a4\uff0c\u4e00\u6709\u52a8\u9759\uff0c\u5c31\u6c6a\u6c6a\u5927\u53eb\uff0c\u6545\u4e3a“\u620c\u72d7”\u3002
From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., it is xu. After a busy day, people closed their gates and went to sleep. Dogs guard the gates and bark in case of any noise, so we call it xu dog.
\u591c\u95f4\u4e5d\u70b9\u81f3\u5341\u4e00\u70b9\uff0c\u5c5e\u4ea5\u65f6\u3002\u591c\u6df1\u4eba\u9759\uff0c\u80fd\u542c\u89c1\u732a\u62f1\u69fd\u7684\u58f0\u97f3\uff0c\u4e8e\u662f\u79f0\u4f5c“\u4ea5\u732a”\u3002
From 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., it is hai. In the still of night, people hear pigs digging troughs with their snouts, so we call it hai pig.
\u5c31\u8fd9\u6837\uff0c\u4e00\u5929\u7684\u65f6\u8fb0\u548c\u52a8\u7269\u642d\u914d\u5c31\u6392\u5217\u4e86\u4e0b\u6765\uff1a\u5b50\u9f20\u3001\u4e11\u725b\u3001\u5bc5\u864e\u3001\u536f\u5154\u3001\u8fb0\u9f99\u3001\u5df3\u86c7\u3001\u5348\u9a6c\u3001\u672a\u7f8a\u3001\u7533\u7334\u3001\u9149\u9e21\u3001\u620c\u72d7\u3001\u4ea5\u732a\u3002\u540e\u6765\u4eba\u4eec\u628a\u8fd9\u79cd\u8ba1\u65f6\u6cd5\u7528\u4e8e\u7eaa\u5e74\uff0c\u5c31\u51fa\u73b0\u4e86\u5341\u4e8c\u751f\u8096\u3002
In this way, the 12 shichen and animal signs are matched and sequenced: zi rat, chou ox, yin tiger, mao hare, chen dragon, si snake, wu horse, wei sheep, shen monkey, you rooster, xu dog and hai pig. Later, people used this method of time labeling in numbering years and thus we developed the Chinese Zodiac.
