Chinese music interwove with dances in its early time, and developed into an independent art category in <\/span>Xia Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u590f\u671d xiàcháo) which is also the beginning of the times of bells and drums lasting for 1300 years.<\/p>\n

The enjoyment of music is the privilege of upper class at that time, and the co<\/em>ntent is generally the praises for the co<\/em>nqueror of the nature, the nobles and the governor. Let’s know more a<\/em>bout the history of Chinese music.

Percussion instrument emerged in <\/span>Shang Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u5546\u671d sh\u0101ngcháo), for example, the Bianzhong (a set of hanging bro<\/em>nze bells for polypho<\/em>nic musical sounds). And in <\/span>Zhou Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u5468\u671d zh\u014ducháo), a complete ritual music system was established.<\/p>\n

Grand so<\/em>ngs and dances or Daqu in Chinese is the main style of music from <\/span>Qin Dynasty<\/strong>(\u79e6\u671d qíncháo) to <\/span>Tang Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u5510\u671d tángcháo).<\/p>\n

In Qin and Han dynasties, it was the time for Yuefu So<\/em>ngs (folk so<\/em>ngs collected by government) and Xianghe so<\/em>ngs (a lead singer with harmony singers accompanied by some string and wind instruments).<\/p>\n

In Tang Dynasty, many music education institutions were established officially and grand so<\/em>ngs and dances came to its prosperous day, of which the <\/span>“song of rainbow skirts and feather robes”<\/strong> <\/span>(\u9713\u88f3\u7fbd\u8863\u66f2ní shang y\u01d4 y\u012b q\u01d4) was the most famous one created by Emperor Xuanzong (712 – 756) of Tang Dynasty; And <\/span>Pipa<\/strong> <\/span>(\u7435\u7436 pípá)is the most im<\/em>portant instruments at that time. It is also the same period that music is not just enjoyed in palaces by nobles, and civilian music enjoyment emerged in temple fairs and restaurants.<\/p>\n

It is in <\/span>Song Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u5b8b\u671d sòngcháo) that small-scale music of civilians in public amenities was completely developed and the mature traditio<\/em>nal Chinese opera started. There were kinds of music performances at that time, and many instruments were well-developed such as Pipa, Zheng, flutes and Xiao.

In <\/span>Yuan Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u5143\u671d yuáncháo), Sanxuan emerged and Chinese opera was prosperous with great artists and works, and some of the works still performing today, such as <\/span>the Romance of Western Chamber <\/span><\/strong>(\u897f\u53a2\u8bb0 x\u012bxi\u0101ngjì).<\/p>\n

Regio<\/em>nal narrative so<\/em>ngs and ethnic music were developed quickly in <\/span>Qing Dynasty <\/span><\/strong>(\u6e05\u671d q\u012bngcháo) and kinds of instruments were played together in a group. In the late of Qing Dynasty and modern time, western music was introduced into China and made a great influence to Chinese modern music.<\/p>\n
