When Pang De reached the battlefield, he ordered his soldiers to carry a coffin in front of the troops as a sign of his oath to burn his bridges with Liu Bei’s troops. Both armies fought many times and came out even. The Liu Bei’s general reported to his commander Guan Ping, “Pang De is very skilled and valiant; he deserves to be Cao Cao’s general.” Guan Ping replied, “There is a saying that goes ‘Newborn calves are not afraid of the tiger’.
