A slightly no<\/em>nsensical fairy tale a<\/em>bout a young woman and a cabbage-stealing rabbit that wants to marry her.
One of the interesting grammatical points in this story is the phrase \u5403\u5149 ch\u012b gu\u0101ng. We know that ch\u012b means “to eat”, but gu\u0101ng typically means “to be bright” – so what are those two words doing next to each other? A seco<\/em>ndary meaning of the word gu\u0101ng is “to finish”, or “to use up”. It’s usually placed after a verb to indicate that the verb was done until it couldn’t be done any more, or until something was gone – in this case “to eat up”.
Another interesting word here is the word \u52a8\u624b dòng sh\u01d2u, literally “move hands”. In this case, it means “get going”, or “get started working [on something]“, as in the phrase \u73b0\u5728\u52a8\u624b\u70e7\u996d\u5427, or “Start cooking now”.
I’d imagine the most co<\/em>nfusing piece of this text is the last sentence of the paragraph that begins “\u7b2c\u4e09\u5929…”. Within the parentheses, the tone of the story randomly changes. This should be read as the first (and only) interjection by the story’s narrator, who elaborates on what kind of animals attended the wedding.

\u59d1\u5a18\u5341\u5206\u96be\u8fc7\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u53ea\u6709\u5979\u662f\u4eba\u3002\u5c0f\u5154\u5b50\u8d70\u6765\u8bf4\uff1a“\u5f00\u95e8\u5f00\u95e8\u5feb\u5f00\u95e8\uff0c\u5ba2\u4eba\u4eec\u90fd\u5f88\u6709\u5174\u8da3\u3002”\u88ab\u5f53\u6210\u65b0\u5a18\u7684\u59d1\u5a18\u4e00\u8a00\u4e0d\u53d1\u5730\u62bd\u6ce3\u8d77\u6765\uff0c\u5154\u5b50\u8d70\u4e86\u51fa\u53bb\u3002\u5b83\u518d\u56de\u6765\u65f6\u53c8\u8bf4\uff1a“\u5f00\u996d\u5f00\u996d\u5feb\u5f00\u996d\uff0c\u5ba2\u4eba\u4eec\u809a\u5b50\u90fd\u5f88\u997f\u4e86\u3002”\u65b0\u5a18\u8fd8\u662f\u4e00\u58f0\u4e0d\u542d\uff0c\u987e\u81ea\u6d41\u6cea\uff0c\u5154\u5b50\u53c8\u8d70\u4e86\u3002\u5b83\u7b2c\u4e09\u6b21\u56de\u6765\u65f6\u5bf9\u5c0f\u59d1\u5a18\u8bf4\uff1a“\u63ed\u5f00\u9505\u76d6\u5feb\u63ed\u5f00\uff0c\u5ba2\u4eba\u5df2\u7ecf\u4e0d\u8010\u70e6\u3002”\u65b0\u5a18\u6c89\u9ed8\u7740\uff0c\u5154\u5b50\u53c8\u51fa\u53bb\u4e86\u3002\u4e8e\u662f\u59d1\u5a18\u5c06\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u8863\u670d\u5957\u5728\u4e00\u4e2a\u7a3b\u8349\u4eba\u8eab\u4e0a\uff0c\u7ed9\u5b83\u4e00\u628a\u52fa\u5b50\u88c5\u6210\u6405\u62cc\u9505\u91cc\u716e\u7684\u4e1c\u897f\u7684\u6837\u5b50\uff0c\u7136\u540e\u628a\u5b83\u6446\u5728\u9505\u8fb9\uff0c\u81ea\u5df1\u56de\u5bb6\u627e\u5988\u5988\u53bb\u4e86\u3002\u5c0f\u5154\u5b50\u53c8\u56de\u6765\u558a\uff1a“\u5feb\u5f00\u996d\uff0c\u5feb\u5f00\u996d\uff01”\u7136\u540e\u7ad9\u8d77\u6765\uff0c\u5bf9\u7740\u65b0\u5a18\u5c31\u662f\u4e00\u62f3\uff0c\u7ed3\u679c\u628a\u7a3b\u8349\u4eba\u7684\u5e3d\u5b50\u7ed9\u6253\u6389\u4e86\u3002
\u5c0f\u5154\u5b50\u53d1\u73b0\u8fd9\u4e0d\u662f\u5b83\u8981\u7684\u65b0\u5a18\uff0c\u5341\u5206\u96be\u8fc7\u5730\u79bb\u5f00\u4e86\u90a3\u91cc\u3002
 
Long ago, there was a married woman who brought her daughter to live in a beautiful garden planted with many cabbages. In winter, a rabbit came to the garden and stole the cabbages to eat. Mama said to her daughter, “Go chase that rabbit away.” The girl went outside and said to the rabbit, “Wei! Rabbit, you’ll soon eat up all of our cabbage!” The rabbit said to the girl, “Young lady, come sit on my tail, I’ll take you to my house.”
But the girl was unwilling.
On the second day, the rabbit came to eat the cabbages again. Mama again said to her daughter, “Go into the garden and drive that rabbit away.” The girl went outside and said to the rabbit, “Wei! Rabbit, you’ll soon eat up all of our cabbage!” The rabbit said to the girl, “Young lady, come sit on my tail, I’ll take you to my house.” But the girl still refused.
On the third day, the rabbit came again, and sat on top of the cabbage. The mother said to her daughter, “Go chase that rabbit away.” So the girl went outside and said, “Wei! Rabbit, you’ll soon eat up all of our cabbage!” The rabbit said to the girl, “Young lady, sit on my tail and I’ll take you to my house.” The girl sat on the rabbit’s tail and was taken to the rabbit’s house far away. He said to the girl, “Now get started with the cooking, use green vegetables and millet, I’ll go invite guests to the wedding.” Presently, all the guests arrived (and who were the guests? I’ll tell you what I heard from someone else: They were all rabbits! A dairy cow was the pastor, who took charge of the wedding for the bride and groom; and a fox was the master of ceremonies, with his altar set beneath a rainbow).
The girl was very sad, because o<\/em>nly she was human. The rabbit approached her and said, “Open the door, open the door, hurry and open the door, the guests are very interested [in seeing you].” The unwitting bride [lit: girl who was being treated as a bride] began sobbing without saying anything, and the rabbit went away. When he came back again, he said, “Serve the food, serve the food, hurry and serve the food, the guests are all very hungry.” The girl, crying to herself, still didn’t make a peep, and the rabbit again went away. The third time he came back, he said to the girl, “Uncover the saucepan, quick uncover the pot, the guests are getting impatient.” The bride remain uncommunicative, and the rabbit went away again. So the girl took her own clothes and put them on a scarecrow, put a spoon in its hand so that it appeared to be stirring the boiling pot, then positio<\/em>ned him next to the pot, and then she went back home to her mother.
The rabbit came back again and yelled, “Hurry and serve the food, hurry and serve the food!” Then he stood up and raised a fist to the girl, and co<\/em>nsequently knocked the scarecrow’s hat off.
When the rabbit found out that this wasn’t his bride, he sadly went away from there.
