The city of Beijing is soliciting public opinion on names for its Hutongs. While they should be preserved and protected, some names should be changed to become graceful.

In the Chinese capital, <\/span>huto<\/em>ngs(\u80e1\u540c)<\/strong> <\/span>are alleys formed by lines of <\/span>siheyuan(\u56db\u5408\u9662),<\/strong> <\/span>or traditio<\/em>nal courtyard residences. Many neighborhoods were <\/span>formed(\u5f62\u6210)<\/strong> <\/span>by joining one siheyuan to another to form a hutong, and then <\/span>joining one hutong to another(…\u548c…\u8fde\u5728\u4e00\u8d77).<\/strong> <\/span>The word hutong is also used to refer to such <\/span>neighborhoods(\u793e\u533a).<\/strong><\/p>\n

A <\/span>draft plan(\u8349\u6848)<\/strong> <\/span>by <\/span>Peking University(\u5317\u4eac\u5927\u5b66) <\/span><\/strong>suggests that historical names should be given <\/span>priority(\u4f18\u5148\u6743)<\/strong> <\/span>when choosing new names for Hutongs. They should <\/span>reflect(\u53cd\u6620)<\/strong> <\/span>Beijing’s <\/span>history(\u5386\u53f2)<\/strong> <\/span>and <\/span>customs(\u4e60\u4fd7),<\/strong>demo<\/em>nstrate(\u5c55\u793a)<\/strong> <\/span>its city planning and be easy to find and remember.<\/p>\n

Under the situation wher it is hard to use a direct historical name, their <\/span>homopho<\/em>nic(\u540c\u97f3\u7684)<\/strong> <\/span>names could be <\/span>co<\/em>nsidered(\u8003\u8651)<\/strong> <\/span>in order to maintain the inherent relation and achieve elegance, such asFenzhang(\u594b\u7ae0)<\/strong> <\/span>Hutong instead of <\/span>Fenchang(\u7caa\u573a)(<\/strong>dung yard) Hutong.<\/p>\n

In addition to the <\/span>proposal(\u63d0\u8bae)<\/strong> <\/span>of <\/span>preserving(\u4fdd\u62a4)<\/strong> <\/span>Beijing Hutongs, the papers also claims thatrepeated names(\u91cd\u540d)<\/strong> <\/span>are forbidden to use for newly co<\/em>nstructed express ways, roads, bridges and transportation stations.<\/p>\n
