\u5e74\u4f1a(nián huì) is an annual meeting held by most Chinese companies or institutes.  The spectacular event aims at marking an end for the past year and inspiring employees to work harder in the coming new year. With an atmosphere similar to a family party, \u5e74\u4f1a is wher people can enjoy a talent show from their colleagues, and sometime expect a bit more (for example, prizes or bonuses).<\/p>\n

                But I am co<\/em>ncerned that the year-end bo<\/em>nus might be up the spout. If so, that would be such a bummer.<\/p>\n

"\u62ff\u624b"(ná sh\u01d2u) means "be expert in or good at (something)". For example, "\u62ff\u624b\u83dc" is specialty (dish). "\u6211\u4eec\u7684\u4e50\u961f\u5728\u6f14\u594f\u62ff\u624b\u6b4c\u66f2\u65f6\u8868\u73b0\u51fa\u4f17\u3002(Our band shines when we play the so<\/em>ngs we know best.) In the dialogue, "\u620f" means "performance", so "\u62ff\u624b\u620f" refers to “a certain performance one is good at”. By extension, it means “skills or talents one is known for”.<\/p>\n

"\u5e74" is “year”, "\u7ec8" is “end”, and "\u5956" is “bonus”, so the word \u5e74\u7ec8\u5956(nián zh\u014dng ji\u01ceng) is year-end bonus.<\/p>\n

"\u91cd\u5934\u620f"(zhòng tóu xì), literally meaning "heavy head drama", refers to the most im<\/em>portant or the best part of an event. For example, \u6211\u4e0d\u60f3\u9519\u8fc7\u8fd9\u573a\u6bd4\u8d5b\u7684\u91cd\u5934\u620f\u3002(I don’t want to miss the best part of the game.) \u5728\u5317\u4eac\u89c2\u5149\u7684\u91cd\u5934\u620f\u5c31\u5728\u7d2b\u7981\u57ce\u3002(The highlight of traveling in Beijing has to be the Forbidden City.)<\/p>\n

"\u6ce1\u6c64(pào t\u0101ng )" literally means "to soak in soup". If something is soaked in soup for a long time, it becomes useless or dissolves. Therefore, this word means "to have one’s hopes dashed", "fall through" or "up in smoke". For example, \u53c8\u4e00\u4efd\u597d\u5de5\u4f5c\u6ce1\u6c64\u4e86\u3002
